            Magnéto Bosch. ca. 1911.

            Est: $2,500 - $3,000

ARTIST: LUCIAN BERNHARD (1883-1972) SIZE: 22 x 31 1/4 in./55.8 x 79.5 cm PRINTER: DESCRIPTION: In this variant of the well-known Bosch ignition systems poster featuring a Mephistian caricature of Belgian race car driver Camille Jenatzy, the ignition is switched for an airplane magneto engine, while the devilish image remains the same with no regard being paid to the slight difference between cars and airplanes. The technology represented is from the World War I era; interestingly, most of the piston engine aircraft operating today still use dual magnetos, even though a single one will operate the engine at approximately 85% efficiency. This is the French language version. (Art Nouveau; Technology; German)

Original 1950's Lucian Bernhard Poster for Amoco - Make It Amoco all The Way

            Est: $1,200 - $1,800

This poster image is in the classic typographical style of Lucian Bernhard and was a part of a large collection of pieces that he created for Amoco. Amoco Corporation, originally Standard Oil Company (Indiana), is a global chemical and oil company that was founded in 1889 around a refinery located in Whiting, Indiana, United States. It later absorbed the American Oil Company, founded in Baltimore in 1910 and incorporated in 1922 by Louis Blaustein and his son Jacob. Amoco merged with British Petroleum in December 1998, forming BP Amoco. Shortly after the merger, Amoco stations began a rebranding that saw the stations change their names to the BP marque while continuing to sell Amoco-branded fuel. Eventually all traces of the Amoco brand name were eliminated and the stations adopted the BP branding permanently, although Amoco's grade naming system is still in use. The firm's innovations included two essential parts of the modern industry, the gasoline tanker truck and the drive-through filling station. Its headquarters were located in the Amoco Building (now the Aon Center) in Chicago, Illinois. Lucian Bernhard (March 15, 1883 - May 29, 1972) was a German graphic designer, type designer, professor, interior designer, and artist during the first half of the twentieth century. He was born in Stuttgart, Germany, on March 15, 1883, as Emil Kahn to a Jewish family, but changed his name to his more commonly known pseudonym in 1905. His first name is often spelled Lucien. He was influential in helping create the design style known as Plakatstil (Poster Style), which used reductive imagery and flat-color as well as Sachplakat ('object poster') which restricted the image to simply the object being advertised and the brand name. He was also known for his designs for Stiller shoes, Manoli cigarettes, and Priester matches. Though he studied briefly at the Akademie in Munich, he was largely self-taught. He moved to Berlin in 1901 where he worked as a poster designer and art director for magazines. In 1920, he became a professor at the Akademie der Künste until 1923, when he emigrated to New York City. In 1928, he opened the Contempora Studio with Rockwell Kent, Paul Poiret, Bruno Paul, and Erich Mendelsohn where he worked as a graphic artist and interior designer. Bernhard did extensive typographic work for the American Type Founders Company as well as other advertisers. For Amoco, he redesigned their logo in addition to designing a wonderful group of posters. Lucian Bernhard. Plakat »Manoli Kardash Cigaretten«.

            Est: €4,000 - €5,000

Farblithographie. 1912. 35 : 46,5 cm. – Makellos erhalten. – Freigestellt passepartouriert in Museumsrahmung. Das frühe Plakat in Europa und den USA III/2, S. 222 (Abb. mit Verweis auf die hier vorliegende kleinere Ausführung). – 100 Jahre Deutscher Werkbund, 2007, S. 103 (Variante) [Keywords: ; Typography, Letterheads, Bauhaus ]

Utilizing the Das Plakat emblem of a woman gazing through her lorgnette, the poster promotes an evening event hosted by the Breslau Friends of the Poster to celebrate 20 years of German poster design. LUCIAN BERNHARD (1883-1972). "CASTELL" / A.W. FABER. 1908. 11¾x17¼ inches, 29¾x43¾ cm.

            Est: $1,500 - $2,000

LUCIAN BERNHARD (1883-1972) "CASTELL" / A.W. FABER. 1908. 11 3/4x17 1/4 inches, 29 3/4x43 3/4 cm. Condition B+: small tears and abrasions at edges; creases in image; minor scuffing at bottom; small metal grommets at top edge; cardboard strips along top and bottom on verso. Paper. In 1906, at the age of 23, Lucian Bernhard won a poster design competition sponsored by Priester matches. Ernst Growald, the director of the Berlin printing establishment Hollerbaum & Schmidt, recognized his talent and immediately hired Bernhard. The young artist quickly developed a graphic design system that proved to be revolutionary in the advertising world. Bernhard was the father of the Sachsplakat (Object Poster), a style in which the object is depicted in flat colors, with no ornamentation and no shadow, against a monochromatic background with very large, bold typography. This rare design for A.W. Faber pencils (the first brand name pencil) epitomizes this style.

LUCIAN BERNHARD (1883-1972) & FRITZ ROSEN (1890-1980). REKLAME SCHAU. 1929. 32½x23¼ inches, 82½x59 cm. Hans Pusch, Berlin.

            Est: $4,000 - $6,000

LUCIAN BERNHARD (1883-1972) & FRITZ ROSEN (1890-1980) REKLAME SCHAU. 1929. 32 1/2x23 1/4 inches, 82 1/2x59 cm. Hans Pusch, Berlin. Condition B+: restoration over tape marks, replaced losses and expertly-repaired tears in margins; minor abrasions in image; hand-written notations in bottom left corner. In 1925, Lucian Bernhard emigrated to the United States - not for political reasons, but to explore new business opportunities in America. He left his studio in Berlin to his partner Fritz Rosen, who ran the company until 1933 when he too emigrated to America. In 1929, Bernhard and Rosen had a large retrospective exhibition in Berlin; to advertise the show, they not only co-designed this poster, but also a cover for the magazine Gebrauchsgraphik (picturing the two of themselves with globes instead of heads - Bernhard's being the larger of the two). Their collaborative effort on the poster resulted in this intriguing, well-balanced "look and listen" image, playing stylistically on light and complementary colors. Half blue, half orange, half awake, half asleep, listening closely on one side, and peering attentively on the other, the two men capture the split personality of their working relationship while accentuating the common goals they strive to achieve.
