Artist Oscar Edmund Berninghaus was born in St. Louis in 1874. His skill at sketching local events led to an apprenticeship in lithography and engraving when he was 16. He also attended night classes at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts. Oscar Edmund Berninghaus, the painter, initially worked as a commercial artist for the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad, and it was in this context that he came to spend a week in Taos. He was fascinated by the area, and thereafter spent his summers in the town. He was a founding member of the Taos Society of Artists, established in 1915.

Artist Oscar Edmund Berninghaus is best remembered for his paintings of life in the West, such as the Californian gold rush captured in his work, The Forty-niners.
