Oscar E. Berninghaus (American, 1874-1952) The Water Hole

          Est: $15,000 - $25,000

Oscar E. Berninghaus (American, 1874-1952) The Water Hole Signed 'O. E. BERNINGHAUS' bottom left, oil on canvas laid down to board 10 x 12 in. (25.4 x 30.5cm) Provenance Kennedy Galleries, Inc., New York, New York. (Presumably) acquired directly from the above. Collection of Harrison Eiteljorg, Sr., Indianapolis, Indiana. By descent in the Eiteljorg family. Private Collection, Pennsylvania. Exhibited "Painters in Taos, the Formative Years: The Eiteljorg Collection," Phoenix Art Museum, Phoenix, Arizona, February 22-April 13, 1980 (per label verso). Note Berninghaus, one of the founding members of the Taos Society of Artists, first visited northern New Mexico in 1899 while on assignment for the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad. Dividing his time between the Southwest and St. Louis for much of the next two decades, he settled permanently in Taos in 1925. Until his death in 1952, Berninghaus trained his eye on his adopted home in the High Desert—its stunning landscapes and, especially, its native inhabitants. Berninghaus' sensitivity to his subjects–and his success as a painter–may be attributed to the privileged position he held within the Pueblo Indian community. He was one of the few non-natives to be admitted to the kivas of the Pueblo, an honor uncommon for the time. This access, and the close relationships Berninghaus forged over the course of 25 years, uniquely positioned him to document the customs and traditions–indeed, the spirit and character–of Native American life. The Water Hole, a compelling picture that belies its modest dimensions, depicts a pair of figures on horseback under a grove of piñon pines. The expansive Southwestern landscape–a patchwork of russet and green–unfolds behind them. An interplay of light, shadow, and atmosphere–much beloved by Berninghaus and his Taos Society of Artists colleagues–affords the painting an almost lyrical quality. Berninghaus' riders and their mounts, and the region's arid, undulating hills, offer a striking tableau: Native American life, sensitively portrayed, amid the natural beauty of the High Desert.

Oscar E Berninghaus (1874-1952) Woodcut "Early Taos." The Stark Museum of Art, known for its collection of Western Art, has an example of "Early Taos" in its collection. Oscar Berninghaus began his career in his native St. Louis as a commercial lithographer. In 1899, as a reward for his hard work in taking night classes at Washington University and at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts, he was given a month's paid vacation and provided with free passage to the West by the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad. While visiting Taos, Oscar met Bert Phillips, who became a lifelong friend, and was inspired to join the new Taos artist's colony. Berninghaus established a seasonal rhythm based on his family's needs, spending winters in St. Louis pursuing a successful career as a commercial artist and summers in Taos painting the Native Americans, their horses and the landscape. These candid paintings of Taos earned him great respect among the other artists. Though residing in St. Louis, he became a founding member of the Taos Society of Artists in 1915 and sent his paintings on tour with their traveling exhibitions. Successful accounts, especially Anheuser-Busch, allowed him to settle in Taos permanently in 1925. Overall Size: 11 1/4 x 9 3/4 in. Sight Size: 6 3/4 x 5 3/4 in. #1330

Oscar Edmund Berninghaus (1874 - 1952) "Meeting on the Plains" Oil on Board. Signed on lower right. A founder in 1898 of the Taos Society of Artists, Oscar Berninghaus excelled at drawing animals and figures in contemporary garb in Southwestern landscapes. In 1898, he was on an illustration assignment for "McClure's" magazine, which took him for the first of many times into New Mexico and Arizona. He had heard of the special beauty of Taos and there met Bert Geer Phillips, who was already a resident, and Phillips invited him to return. This visit began a tradition of spending the winter months in St. Louis and the summers in Taos. He remained active in both communities, and for many years designed the costumes and floats for the Veiled Prophet parade, a famous annual event in St. Louis. He also did a series of western scenes commissioned by the Anheuser-Busch Brewing Association to promote a manly, ruggedness theme in their products and to enhance their image as good Americans. In 1912, he joined the founding members of the Taos Society of Artists, whose goal was to promote sales of their work in Taos and other markets. In 1919, he bought an old adobe house near Taos overlooking the town and in 1925 settled there permanently. His affection for the Pueblo Indians was so great that he became a good friend to the Taos Indians and was one of the few white men allowed into the kivas of the Pueblo. He would learn their rituals and custom, but would paint only what the Indians thought proper. He felt a sense of history and wanted to preserve it accurately for future generations, and at the same time respect that which was sacred to them. **First Time At Auction** Oscar Edmund (O.E.) Berninghaus (American, 1874-1952). "Attack on the Overland Stage" ca. 1950s. Signed O.E. Berninghaus at lower right. A vibrant lithograph used for advertising by Anheuser Busch. The scene depicts a dramatic battle between Native Americans on horseback and two armed white men in their horse-drawn wagon. The piece is further embellished with a handsome wood-patterned border and a label at the bottom center that reads, "Attack on the Overland Stage 1860 / Presented by Anheuser Bush Inc. St. Louis, MO / Budweiser / King of Beers". On the back is its original promotional label from Anheuser Busch. Oscar Edmund Berninghaus was a founding member of the famous Taos Society of Artists. His artwork captured the spirit of the American West and Native American culture. Size: 32" W x 28.25" H (81.3 cm x 71.8 cm) framed The label on the back reads, " The Anheuser-Busch Brewery commissioned Western-themed works for their advertisements from Berninghaus for many years, and published, "Epoch Marking Events of American History: A Series of Historical Pictures, painted by O. E. Berninghaus" in 1914. As major patrons of Berninghaus, the Busch family acquired a number of his paintings, and later donated approximately 50 works to the St. Louis Art Museum during the 1970s. Berninghaus studied at the Saint Louis School of Fine Arts at night, while working for lithography firms by day. In 1899, he was sent to the West by the Denver and Rio Grande Railway to depict the landscape along its route. This was when he first visited Taos, New Mexico, the picturesque southwestern town that inspired him throughout the remainder of his career. For several years, he created art in Saint Louis during the winter and painted in his Taos studio during the summer. In 1925, he settled permanently in New Mexico and became a founding member of the Taos Society of Artists.
