            Jun. 28, 2024

Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini (model of) (Napoli 1598-Roma 1680) : Christ

            Est: €1,500 - €3,000

17th-18th century Bronze, transparent golden patina, hollow lost wax casting 42 x 33 x 7 cm Gian Lorenzo Bernini created, with the help of Ercole Ferrara, a sculptor from Como who moved to Rome, 25 crucifixes for the altars of St. Peter's Basilica. Of these, 23 are still visible, as one has gone missing and another is in the Vatican deposits. Of the twenty-three, eighteen represent the living Christ, five the dead Christ. The Crucifix presented here repeats the same model as the living one. It is impossible here to delve into whether other Roman foundries could copy Bernini's models, or whether we are faced with a later workshop copy. What is certain is that the model is very rare and faithfully repeats the one conceived by Bernini and created by Ercole Ferrata in the mid-17th century. Models identical to ours at the Bode Museum in Berlin and at the Princeton University Art Museum.

ACCORDING TO GIAN LORENZO BERNINI Naples, Italy (1598) / Rome, Italy (1680) "Saint Bibiana", Rome, late 17th century - early 18th century

            Est: €142,500 - €190,000

Bronze Between 1624 and 1626 Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598- 1680) made the sculpture in “Santa Bibiana” marble commissioned by Pope Urban VIII as part of the renovation of his homonymous church in Rome, his first architectural project, where it is still preserved. The present bronze, due to its high-quality modeling and slightly reddish tone, was probably made in Rome in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. As Philippe Malgouyres indicates, the lost wax casting technique would be used from a high-quality terracotta model, which was surely molded from the original marble. These types of bronze reductions of Bernini's works are quite rare and especially with religious themes, as is this case. Of this Saint Bibiana, only a couple of other examples that appeared on the international art market are known (Drouot, Paris, December 9, 1994, lot 52 and Christie's New York, June 2, 1993, lot 221). It is also worth mentioning that François Crozat, Marquis of Châtel (1691-1750), secretary of King Louis XV of France, owned a bronze Saint Bibiana, which was believed to have been cast from the model of Bernini's statue recorded in the catalog of the posthumous sale of his collection in Paris on December 14, 1750. This reference confirms the existence of this type of works in the first half of the 18th century and opens a possibility as to their provenance. With mobile jaw. The most famous carved skull of this kind is the Carrara marble skull sculpted by Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598 - 1680) in around 1655, which is now in the Dresden Sculpture Collection, SKD inv. no. ZV 3606. Bernini created the impressive work on behalf of the newly elected Pope Fabio Chigi (1599 - 1667). The skull is said to have stood on his desk until his death and reminded him daily of his inescapable fate, but at the same time it was also intended as a reminder to make the most of his life. The Saxon Elector Augustus the Strong acquired the piece from Chigi's descendants in 1728.

            Est: €150,000 - €160,000

From GIAN LORENZO BERNINI (Naples, 1598 - Rome, 1680). Rome, early 17th century. "Saint Bibiana". Blued bronze. Work previously auctioned at Sotheby's. In 1993 another identical model was auctioned at Christie's New York. This work was catalogued as being by the artist himself. Measurements: 48 x 20 x 14 cm. Bronze work made by Bernini's bronze workshop in Rome at the beginning of the 17th century, under the supervision of the Baroque master. It is a serial piece of which very few copies were made, although the exact number is unknown. It is based on the sculpture of Saint Bibiana that Gian Lorenzo Bernini made in marble between 1624 and 1626, now in the church of Santa Bibiana in Rome. The saint, draped in a cloak moulding her breast and a Roman-style mantle, stands on a circular base, her right arm raised holding a symbolic flame and the palm of martyrdom in her left. Bernini designed and modelled the statue, which, however, was executed under the direction of Giovanni Antonio Mari in 1657. The structure of the work faithfully reflects the inspiration of Bernini's Saint Bibiana in the church of the same name in Rome. The first bronze reductions of Gian Lorenzo Bernini's models are rarely seen on the art market. are rarely seen on the art market. The Saint Bibiana is one of the few religious sculptures by Bernini that were cast in bronze. that were cast in bronze. The only others are the "Beata Ludovica Albertoni" and the "David". Moreover, the bronze casts of the Saint Bibiana are particularly rare, in fact, only two others are known: one that was only two others are known: one at Drouot, Paris, 9 December 1994, lot 52 (48.5 cm) and another offered at Christie's New York, 9 December 1994, lot 52 (48.5 cm) and another offered at Christie's New York. another offered at Christie's New York, 2 June 1993, lot 221 (47 cm). According to Philippe Malgouyres, these bronzes are high quality terracottas, which were probably modelled from marble. This is clearly the case with the Saint Bibiana, which is largely copied in clay", and he believes that the same is true of the Beata Ludovica. Of the Beata Ludovica Albertoni there are larger-scale bronze versions of several of Bernini's mythological models, such as "Pluto and Proserpina" and "Apollo", documented as having been acquired by George Parker, future Earl of Macclesfield (c. 1695-1764), on his Grand Tour of Italy between 1719 and 1722.

            Est: €8,000 - €16,000

Giovanni (Gian) Lorenzo Bernini (1598 Neapel - 1680 Rom) nach Raub der Proserpina Weißer Carrara-Marmor. Vollplastisch gearbeitete, italienische Replik (20. H. ca. 132,5 cm; Sockel-H. 90,5 cm; Ges.-H. ca. 223 cm. After Giovanni (Gian) Lorenzo Bernini (1598 - 1680). 20th C. Italian Carrara marble sculpture after the well-known artwork of the Rape of Proserpina by Bernini in the Galleria Borghese in Rome.

            Crucifixion, 1636

            Est: €250,000 - €350,000

This canvas, signed and dating back 1636, is a rare example of painting by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, who was spurred on to painting by Urban VIII. This small canvas renders the subject with great drama through the wavy and nervous contours of the Crucifixion, but with a careful eye to a naturalistic taste derived from the Roman experience of Velazquez.

A rare Meissen Böttger stoneware head of Apollo, circa 1708-13 Modelled by Paul Heerman (1673-1732) after Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680), 10cm high Provenance:Sotheby Parke Bernet, New York, 6 June 1972, lot 173Modelled after sketches done by Paul Heermann in Rome of the celebrated marble group of Apollo and Daphne by Bernini (1622-25), made for Scipione Borghese and placed in the Palazzo Borghese in Rome. Heermann, who had worked with his uncle, Johann Georg Heermann, at Troja castle near Prague, was in Dresden from around 1705, where he worked on the Zwinger Palace and, from 1708, supplied models to Johann Friedrich Böttger for the Meissen manufactory. According to an invoice of 9 October 1708, Heermann delivered three figures to Böttger's colleague, Dr. Bartholomaei, at a cost of 4 Talers (Rainer Rückert, Biographische Daten der Meißener Maunufaktaristen des 18. Jahrhunderts (1990), p. 81). The Apollo head is recorded in the earliest known inventory of the Meissen manufactory of 28 May 1711, nos. 251 and 999, and again on 3 August the same year: "Form 42..Apollonis Kopf" (published by Claus Boltz, Formen des Boettgersteinzeug im Jahre 1711, in Mitteilungsblatt der Keramikfreunde der Schweiz 96 (1982), pl. 11, fig. 16). The sales from the Dresden porcelain collection in 1919 and 1920 included one example in each sale (Lepke's, 7-8 October 1919, lot 58; 12-14 October 1920, lot 82 (with Japanese Palace inventory number 217 - the 1770 inventory lists ten "Judithen-Köpfe"). See also M. Eberle, Das Rote Gold (n.d.), no. 8, for a similar example in the historic collection in Schloss Friedenstein, Gotha, and a list of other published examples.
