        40 ORIGINAL WORKS ON PAPER BY BLANCHE BERNSTEIN C. 1950'S. Comprising over 36 individual original works on paper by American artist Blanche Bernstein (1907-1998). Comprising mostly pastels on paper some loose and some mounted on card stock depicting circus figures, animals and related subjects. Including over 20 works mounted on 24 inches x 18 inches card stock, and 6 or more mounted on 36 inches x 24 inches card stock as well as loose examples measuring approximately 20 inches x 28 inches. The majority are rendered in pastel some with ink. A good many have extensive notations on verso including in some cases the figures depicted or the title, most if not all related to the Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Circus. None framed and in various states of condition. (Count 40+) Provenance: The estate of the artist. Known for her behind-the-scene paintings of Ringling Brothers circus figures, animals and clowns, Blanche Bernstein was born in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1907. She studied at Butler University where she earned a BA degree, at Johns Hopkins University, and in Indianapolis at Circle Art Academy and Taflinger Art School. In New York, she attended the Art Students League, Columbia University, and New York University where she received an MA degree. In the late 1950's, Bernstein painted in California along the Barbary Coast, and she also operated The Sisters Arts Gallery in Greenwich Village with her sister Elizabeth Yakovlev. Including a landscape with red barn, 8 inches x 10 inches, a modernist still life with fish 20 inches x 16 inches, an abstract seated figure 24 inches x 18 inches, a landscape with snowy mountains 8 inches x 10 inches, a seated man with beard 24 inches x 18 inches, a ballerina 30 inches x 22 inches, a modernist landscape 8 inches x 10 inches, a still life with fruit 24 inches x 18 inches, still life with flowers 18 inches x 22 inches and a large gouache barren landscape with tower 20 inches x 18 inches.         (American 1910-1998) "The Stone Quarry" circa 1930's. Oil on canvas, signed on tacking edge, mid right. 20"x24" (unframed). For twenty years, Blanche Bernstein painted behind-the-scenes views of the Ringling Bros. Famous clowns. In 1958, she painted scenes of San Francisco's "Barbary Coast" area. With her sister, Eliz. Yakovlev, she conducted The Sisters Arts Gallery in Greenwich Village, NYC, for three years. She painted in casein, egg tempera, oil, pastel, and acrylic, and widely exhibited throughout her career.
