        HELENE BERTAUX (FRENCH, 1825-1909): A BRONZE BUST OF A GIRL WITH DRAGON FLY signed 'Me. Leon Bertaux', on a rouge marble socle over a black marble base, 62cm high. Footnote: Helene Bertaux was a poineering advocate for female artists, working in Paris in the late 19th century, she was instrumental in establishing the first sculpture school for women. She founded the Union of Women Painters and Sculptors in 1881, and she also set up several monetary awards for women artists, and campaigned successfully to force the Ecole des Beaux-Arts to admit women. In 1896 she was the first female member elected to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. At the Universal Exhibition of 1889, she was the first female sculptor to receive a gold medal, and she also won several gold medals at the Paris salon. The present bronze bust is loosely based on her marble bust of Spring, which was exhibited at the Chicago World's Fair in 1893 (please see additional images). She signed her work 'Madame Leon Bertaux' as that was her husand's name.

        Helene Bertaux, Allegorie der Astronomie Frankreich, Ende 19. Jh., ovales Wandrelief aus Alabaster, rechts unten signiert Madame Leon (Helene) Bertaux, sehr guter Zustand, Maße 42 x 30 cm. Künstlerinfo: (1825 in Paris bis 1909), französische Bildhauerin, Tochter des Bildhauers Pierre Hébert, ausgebildet durch ihren Vater und durch Dumont, stellte sie 1849 unter dem Pseudonym Allélit zum ersten Male im Salon aus (weibliche Bildnisstatuette in Gips) und wurde dann in den Salonausstellungen 1864, 1867, 1873 und 1889 durch Medaillen ausgezeichnet, 1892 Kandidatur für einen Sitz in der Académie de France als Nachfolgerin des Bildhauers Bonnassieux.
