Johann Berthelsen (1883-1972) Brooklyn Bridge, New York oil on canvasboard 16 x 12 inches 24 x 20 inches (frame) signed lower right: Johann Berthelsen verso: label, Simpson Galleries, Houston, Texas Born in Copenhagen, Johann Berthelsen’s parents moved in artistic and professional circles. He later began a friendship with the painter, Wayman Adams. In 1920, seeking to advance their careers, Berthelsen and Adams moved to New York, where both achieved rapid success. Berthelsen is most known for his poetic painterly renditions of New York City. His special interest was the early winter months…he was particularly fascinated with the subtle range of colors and the softening of hard contours effected by falling snow. This painting is significant due to its subject matter, a favorite of the artist, depicting the Brooklyn Bridge Tower and James Slip Gospel Mission, the brown and green buildings also known by Berthelsen as the “Old Sailor’s Home”.

Johann Berthelsen (American, 1883-1972) Oil on artist board, Signed Lower Right "Johann Berthelsen", titled "Tree in Winter", measures 8 x 6 inches not including custom frame. He was born in Copenhagen in 1883, the 7th of seven sons, to Conrad and Dorothea Karen Berthelsen. The parents moved in artistic and professional circles. His father was a tenor with the Royal Opera and his mother was a nurse affiliated with a prominent physician. A year before Johann's birth, his parents visited the United States, but the marriage was in trouble and they returned to Denmark to divorce. In 1890, his mother brought the children to America, settling in Manistee, Michigan, with her sister's family. They would eventually live in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, a city on the shore of Lake Michigan. As a teenager, Johann was actively involved in choirs and singing groups. And always, he loved to draw and paint. Though obviously intelligent and curious, he was too impatient to take well to schoolwork and never went beyond the 5th grade. Johann Berthelsen (American, 1883-1972) Oil painting, Signed Lower Right, Titled " Tree in Winter" measures (8 x 6) inches (20.3 x 15.2cm) He was born in Copenhagen in 1883, the 7th of seven sons, to Conrad and Dorothea Karen Berthelsen. The parents moved in artistic and professional circles. His father was a tenor with the Royal Opera and his mother was a nurse affiliated with a prominent physician. A year before Johann's birth, his parents visited the United States, but the marriage was in trouble and they returned to Denmark to divorce. In 1890, his mother brought the children to America, settling in Manistee, Michigan, with her sister's family. They would eventually live in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, a city on the shore of Lake Michigan. As a teenager, Johann was actively involved in choirs and singing groups. And always, he loved to draw and paint. Though obviously intelligent and curious, he was too impatient to take well to schoolwork and never went beyond the 5th grade.
