          Paul Berthon (French, 1872-1934). An antique lithograph on paper titled "La Reine Wilhelmine" ("Queen Wilhelmina"), after the original from 1901. The artwork depicts the profile of the young Dutch monarch facing to the right, with the artist's plate signature in the upper right corner and the title in French at the bottom center. It is presented under glass, bordered by a tan mat, and set in a gilt wood frame. Created with SnapGenie Work Size: 15.5 x 14.25 in. Dimensions: 29 X 27 X 1 in. Condition: Good to fair condition having mild age related surface wear, with creases and toning. Frame has mild to moderate storage wear and small losses to edges and corners.           ARTIST: PAUL BERTHON (1872-1909) SIZE: 15 5/8 x 33 7/8 in./39.8 x 99.5 cm PRINTER: Imp. Chaix, Paris (not shown) DESCRIPTION: The second in his “Courtisanes” series, “Phryné stands naked, her cloak held high, framing her. Her soft pink skin is cut at the legs by sandal straps, at waist by a snake belt, at upper arm by a snake bracelet and at both wrists by tight bangles. The bearded faces of the three judges surround her. She, however, ignores them; eyes closed she appears to be lost in a reverie, ready at any moment for transfiguration, should it come” (Berthon & Grasset, p. 118). Although it was clearly Berthon’s intent to create other images in this series, only two were published. The artist himself laid out his plans in a May, 1899 interview in The Poster: “After Salomé personifying the Jewish beauty, and Phryné showing her triumphant charms before Greece, I want to study a medieval type of beauty, and it will be for me, an opportunity to revive some old pieces of jewelry or some fantastical landscape” (p. 204). This printing boasts a textual variant at the bottom. (Art Nouveau; Theatre)

Paisley and brocade cover nearly every inch; a 1903 calendarium, in the form of two columns with animal-shaped capitals, borders on the left and right. It’s among the finest and rarest by Berthon. Berthons work is in the style of Art Nouveau, much like his contemporary Alphonse Mucha. His study of the decorative arts influenced his print making, influencing the strong lines and natural details that guided his art. Artist information: actually Paul Louis Joseph Emile Berton Berthon also Berthow, French painter, draughtsman, graphic artist. Painter, draughtsman, graphic artist, poster and book designer and decorative artist (1872 Villefranche-sur-Saône to 1909 Paris), first artistic training in Villefranche-sur-Saône, from 1893 in Paris, studied here at the École Guérin under Luc-Olivier Merson and Eugène Grasset, later a pupil of Auguste Allongé, Jules-Elie Delaunay and Pierre Cécile Puvis de Chavannes, exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1895, which made him instantly popular.
