        F. BETBEDER (1847-1914), Caricature of Empress Augusta of Prussia, around 1870, Lithography

        Est: €450 - €600

Faustin Betbeder (1847 Soissons (Aisne) - 1914 Camberwell): Caricature to Empress Augusta of Prussia A Augusta Impératrice de toutes les Prusses, c. 1870, Lithography Technique: Hand colored Lithography on Paper Inscription: Lower right signed in the printing plate: "Faustin". Date: c. 1870 Description: Biting caricature of the German Empress Augusta, presumably on the occasion of the war policy of the German Empire around 1870, showing the actually pacifist Empress bare-breasted and surrounded by the dead on a battlefield. She was opposed to the war endeavours of her husband and the Prussian Prime Minister Otto von Bismarck, as well as the Franco-Prussian War. The caricature attacks her powerlessness as empress against the political decisions of Prussia and the German Empire. Person: Depicted: Empress Augusta von Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach, German Reich Ernestiner (1811 Weimar - 1890 Berlin) Wife of the later German Emperor Wilhelm I, Queen of Prussia since 1861 and first German Empress after the foundation of the German Empire in 1871. Augusta grew up at the court of the Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach. There she was taught several languages, history, geography, theology, music, painting and dancing. In June 1829 she married Prince Wilhelm of Prussia. The marriage was difficult, as Wilhelm actually wanted to marry his cousin Elisa Radziwiłł, who was not of his rank. Nevertheless, Augusta had two children with Wilhelm in 1831 and 1838. After the death of the Prussian King Frederick William III in 1840, Augusta rose to become the wife of the heir to the Prussian throne and witnessed his flight from the Berlin March Revolution in 1848. Shortly afterwards, she received Otto von Bismarck in Potsdam and was subsequently convinced that the latter wanted to exclude her husband from the succession to the throne. Since then she saw Bismarck as her main political enemy and in autumn 1862 tried to prevent his appointment as Prussian Prime Minister. Her political influence came from social gatherings at court and an extensive correspondence. How far Augusta's influence on the king went is still being discussed in research. The pacifist monarch was also active in the charitable field, for example with the founding of the so-called Vaterländische Frauenverein in 1866 or the promotion of the Red Cross. Keywords: Caricature, satire, war, violence, Prussia, Franco-Prussian War, skeleton, death, destruction, power, 19th century, Historicism, Caricature, France,

JEAN-FAUSTIN BETBEDER (FRENCH, 1847-1914) Alice in Wonderland signed and dated l.l. 'B. Faustin / 1902' and inscribed t.r. 'Alice in Wonderland' pen and ink and blue crayon 34.4 x 24 cm (13 1/4 x 9 1/2 in) and two further illustratons by the same hand, 'Uprooted' and 'The philosopher in Lazyland' unframed, (3) Footnote: Jean-Faustin Betbeder was born in Soissons, in Picardy, in Northern France, on 24 June 1847. At the time of the Franco-Prussian War, in 1870, he was studying in Paris at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. His caricature of Napoleon III, entitled L’habit ne fait pas le moins (the cloth doesn’t make the monk), brought him overnight success and a fee of 12,000 francs. This was followed by a series of amusing and popular engravings produced by his swift and vigorous hand. Faustin went to London to collaborate with James Mortimer on his periodical, Figaro, and also contributed to the same editor’s The London Sketch-Book. He stayed in England, marrying and setting up a colour lithograph establishment. In addition to his work as a graphic artist, which made him comparable in stature to Jules Cheret, he produced charming pastels and designed many costumes for productions at London theatres, including the Alhambra and the Lyceum. Living latterly at 19 Hayes Court, Camberwell, and working at the Offley Studios, Brixton, Faustin died on 28 December 1914.
