From 1916 teaching in Frankfurt am Main. From 1919 member of the Frankfurter Künstlerbund. In 1920, together with Hanns Ludwig Katz, Gottfried Diehl and the art dealer Cramer, founds the artists' group Ghat. Travels to France, Italy, Austria and the Netherlands. 1925 Acquaintance with Max Beckmann. 1938 in the course of the Nazi action degenerate art some works confiscated. Stylistically to Expressionism, close to Erich Heckel, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Alexej von Jawlensky and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. Created landscapes, figurative representations and portraits and self-portraits in strong colors. Emil Betzler first studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule Elberfeld and then at the Staatliche Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he passed the examination for the artistic teaching post in 1914. From 1914 to 1915 he did military service, from which he retired due to a serious injury. In 1916 he took up a teaching post in Frankfurt a. Main. In 1917 Betzler published the portfolio "Christ Passion". In 1919 he became a member of the "Frankfurter Künstlerbund" and took part in the first major group exhibition in the M. Goldschmidt gallery. With Hanns Ludwig Katz, Gottfried Diehl and the gallery owner Herbert Cramer, he founded the expressionist artist group "Ghat" in 1920. From the very beginning he was valued in particular as a portraitist. During his entire creative period, however, he also created self-portraits and expressive, moving landscapes such as the present oil painting with the two rivers, which only meet outside the right edge of the picture, and the cubic white houses on the piece of land surrounded by the watercourses. Landscapes like these were created in particular in connection with numerous trips to Italy, France, Austria and the Netherlands. In 1925 Betzler made the acquaintance of Max Beckmann; the following year he was appointed a teacher at the Liebig-Oberrealschule in Frankfurt. In 1930 he was promoted to specialist advisor for art education at universities. Accused of “Bolshevik disintegration” in 1933, Betzler lost his positions, after which he withdrew into private life. In the course of the "Degenerate Art" campaign, three of his works were confiscated in 1937, which are still missing today. After 1945, Betzler again developed a lively exhibition activity. As a member of the BDK, Betzler emerged in the 1950s with his writings and as a teacher in the field of art education. In 1967 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit. Sich umarmendes Paar Feder in Schwarz und Aquarell auf Velin. (19)23. 17,6 x 12,6 cm. Unten links in der Darstellung mit Pinsel in Schwarz monogrammiert "EB" und datiert. Hauptthema in Betzlers Schaffen ist die Darstellung von Paarbeziehungen, das enge Geflecht von Mann und Frau als Sinnbild des Lebendigen. Auf packende Weise führen seine Werke in das Innerste seiner expressionistischen Intention. "Als Maler fesselte mich immer wieder von neuem das Mysterium Mann : Weib, ihr Miteinander, ihr Einssein, ihr Gegeneinander, ihr Tasten und Suchen, ihre Probleme und Komplikationen. (…) Es war eben der Mensch, das Menschliche, was mich anzog. Das 'Unsichtbare' hinter dem Schein sichtbar zu machen." Auch in unserer Zeichnung sucht Betzler die bannende Kraft und expressive Ausstrahlung, die vom sich umarmenden Paar ausgeht, zu Papier zu bringen. Die Linie dient ihm als werkbildendes Element, mit ihr bringt er die innige, zugleich angespannte Beziehung zwischen den Dargestellten in betonender Weise zum Ausdruck. Selten. Betzler 1918' Dimensions, framed: 70 x 67 cm Good condition Provenance: German Collection Oil paintings by the German expressionist Emil Betzler are rarely seen on the art market which makes this self-portrait even more important This expressive painting was executed by the painter Emil Betzler in 1918. It shows a self-portrait of the artist with wide open green eyes and a monocle in the left eye. A skull that somehow resembles the depicted is peering over his left shoulder. Even though still a young man in 1918, Betzler explores the subject of the perishable and the presence of death, most certainly influenced by the events of the First World War. The painting is in good condition with signs of age. The canvas has been relined and there are minor traces of paint loss. The dimensions, framed, are 70 x 67 cm and the dimensions of the canvas on the stretcher are 50.2 x 47.5 cm. Emil Betzler (1892-1974) Emil Betzler was born in Westphalia in 1910. He studied at the Academy of Arts in Düsseldorf between 1912 and1914. In 1916 he moved to Frankfurt where he worked as an artist and a teacher. The print room of the Städel in Frankfurt exhibited a great body of his work. He stood in connection to the 'Frankfurter Künstlerbund' (Frankfurt Association of Artists) and the artist group 'Ghat', and had a close relation to the renowned artist Max Beckmann. He travelled to Italy, France and Switzerland. In 1933 he was charged with anti-fascist behaviour, which resulted in the withdrawal of his occupation. In 1967 he was awarded the order of merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. In the following year he received the gold medal at the Ancona Biennial.

Partly signed and dated (2), partly inscribed (3). Each with inscription 17/1928. partly signed and dated on the stone (3). On various papers. cm ( in)Up to 39,7 x 30,6 cm (15,6 x 12 in), the full sheet. Provenienz: Private collection North Rhine-Westphalia. Born in Kamen, Westphalia, in 1892, Emil Betzler was a painter, draughtsman and printmaker. From 1916 he was an art teacher and instructor at the Hochschule für Erziehung [Teacher Training College] in Frankfurt am Main. Betzler knew many of the famous writers and artists of his day, including Joachim Ringelnatz and Max Beckmann, whose influence is noticeable in Betzler's work. However, Expressionism, which was just emerging at the time, exerted the strongest influence on Betzler. His main theme was relationships between people in all possible variations. [NB] Good overall impression. One partly minimally bumped on the corners, lower right corner with minor crease marks. One with soft crease and squeeze marks in the margins respectively, a few tiny splits and two holes. Lithographs partially with soft crease marks, two with horizontal folds, one with a small tear, one with a tiny paper loss in the lower left corner.
