  • Robyn (The Beaver) Beverland Painting "We Won!" (1997)
    Apr. 18, 2025

Robyn (The Beaver) Beverland Painting "We Won!" (1997)

    Est: $600 - $900

Robyn "The Beaver" Beverland (American, 1957-1998). "We Won!" paint on board, 1997. Signed and dated at lower right center; titled at center right. Experience the uplifting charm of Robyn "The Beaver" Beverland's folk art painting, "We Won!" A whimsical, winged figure rides a pink-maned horse under a stylized American flag, surrounded by four unique head portraits, all amidst celebratory red, white, and blue. Painted with Beverland's signature bright colors and naive style, this piece radiates a joyful spirit and embodies the artist's remarkable resilience. Owning "We Won!" means acquiring a unique and heartwarming artwork by a recognized American folk artist, a piece that brings a touch of optimistic Americana to any collection. Size: 24" W x 24" H (61 cm x 61 cm) About the artist: "Robyn Beverland, known as "The Beaver," was born with Wolfram Syndrome, a genetic disorder that he shared with fewer than 70 other Americans at the time of his death. The Beaver began painting in 1990 when his father gave him art supplies in the hopes that artmaking might be therapeutic. At the time of his death eight years later, hundreds of paintings were stacked by his worktable and along the walls of his studio in the back yard of the Beverland's home. Family portraits, roosters and dogs, all with iconic presences, were among the artist's subjects, which he rendered without context, without even a horizon. Asked about his palette, Beverland stated that he chose his colors by reading the labels on the cans of house-paint he used. He explained that since he was color blind that was the most expedient way for him to deal with color. However, according to his mother, Wanda, the hues that her son selected were generally reflective of his mood." One day, his father bought him some brushes and house paint to use as a means of art therapy. Beverland, having found an outlet for his creative expression, executed a body of work whose joyful lightness and clarity can be seen in museums and galleries across the country. His most popular subjects were angels and magical cats and dogs, but he often painted friends and family as well, as in the lot here entitled “Portrait Grid.”
