  • Philips Gijsels,aktiv nach 1650 in Aia
    Apr. 07, 2016

Philips Gijsels, aktiv nach 1650 in Aia

    Est: €15,000 - €20,000

STILLLEBEN MIT HUMMER, AUSTERN EINER ZITRONE UND ZWEI KRISTALLKELCHEN Öl auf Holz. 74 x 63 cm. Provenienz: Sammlung Edward Speelman, London. Sammlung J. S. Sykes, London. (10315112) (21) Philips Gijsels, active after 1650 in Aia STILL LIFE WITH LOBSTER, OYSTERS, ONE LEMON AND TWO CRYSTAL GOBLETS Oil on panel. 74 x 63 cm. Apocryphal monogram “AVB“ (Abraham van Beyeren) lower left. In the past, this elegant painting has often been mistakenly attributed to Abraham van Beyeren because of the apocryphal monogram in the lower left and subsequently to Peeter Gijsels, who is not related to Philips Gijsels and whose works are often erroneously attributed to his namesake. It was only Fred Meijer who succeeded in unambiguously determining the artist's identity as he recognised the unusual style of this great still life painter. Not much is known about Philips Gijsels and only a few works are undisputedly by his hand. Gijsels' works always show the same objects typically encountered in Dutch painting of the mid-17th century, such as crustaceans, fruit, crystal and vases, that are seemingly depicted in a random arrangement even though the composition is carefully thought out. This is also the case in this painting, where objects are placed on a laid table. The compact composition gives the artist the opportunity to fully demonstrate his talent as a virtuoso colourist and to indulge in mimetic effects such as the transparency of the crystal, the reflections on the jug, the plate, the inside of the oyster bowl or on the grey silk napkin. This artfulness is further highlighted by the dark background. The present work is reminiscent of other paintings by the artist, such as “Still life with oysters, cherries and a slice of lemon“ (Schwerin State Museum) or “Still life with lobster, lemon, oyster and tall fruit bowl“, which was sold on 15 November 2005 at Sotheby’s in Amsterdam (lot 34). Provenance: Edward Speelman collection, London. J. S. Sykes collection, London.

    Nov. 14, 2015

Abraham van Beyeren, Maritime Scene with Stormy Seas

    Est: €20,000 - €25,000

Monogrammed lower right: AVBIn the mid-17th century, Abraham van Beyeren's maritime scenes were among the finest that Holland had to offer in this genre, and this slightly soiled but otherwise well preserved work is an excellent example of this. The viewer's gaze is led from the lower edge of the canvas, over the water and towards the darkly looming storm clouds on the distant horizon. The sailing boats dotted throughout the scene accentuate the perspective effect of this otherwise sparsely defined view. The painter concentrates on the masterly depiction of the waves, light and atmosphere, producing a direct experience of nature. However, the viewer subconsciously registers the danger of the storm as a symbol of man's helpless condition.

ABRAHAM VAN BEYEREN, FISH STILL LIFE

    Est: €40,000 - €60,000

ABRAHAM VAN BEYEREN, FISH STILL LIFE FISH STILL LIFE Monogrammed lower left: AVB f. (AVB ligatured) Various seafood, such as sole, cod, salmon and mussels are shown laid out on a table, some in a basket. The sliced cod and the filleted sea salmon show that the fish are here being presented as fine delicacies. Like fruit and flower still lifes, they depict the wealth of the Dutch, who were able to consume a wide variety of seafood due to their advanced fishing methods. Abraham van Beyeren paints the fish in a reduced palette of red, grey and silver tones and so perfectly documents their surface texture. Abraham van Beyerens was among the most productive Dutch still life painters of the 17th century. Alongside fish still lifes, he also create marines, banquet pieces, small ontbijtjes, as well as flower and fruit still lifes. He spent most of his career in the Hague where he was born, but was also active in Amsterdam, Alkmaar, Gouda and Overschie.

BEYEREN, ABRAHAM VAN (Den Haag 1620 - 1690

    Est: CHF30,000 - CHF50,000

BEYEREN, ABRAHAM VAN (Den Haag 1620 - 1690 Overschie) Stilleben mit einer Zinnkanne, Früchten, Austern, Brot und Wein auf einem Tisch. Öl auf Holz. Unten links monogrammiert: AVB (ligiert) f. 49,2 x 37,2 cm. Nr. 60.8).
