BILLING, Frederick William (1835-1914). Panoramic View of New York City from New Jersey. Graphite Drawing on wove paper. Signed and dated lower right: "F. W. Billing, 1856". 19 1/4" x 48 1/2" sheet, 25 1/2" x 55" framed. Very Fine large scale original drawing of Manhattan across the Hudson River. A truly spectacular panorama of Manhattan drawn from life in 1856 by noted German-born landscape artist Frederick William Billing (1835-1914), who settled in Brooklyn in that same year. The large view looks across and down the Hudson River from New Jersey as figures stand about the cliffs of the Palisades and Hoboken farmland in the foreground. Scant beginnings of Jersey City and Paulus Hook are seen in the lower right as the view fades into the distant Narrows. Recognizable landmarks appear on the New York side such as the Crystal Palace, Trinity Church and Castle Williams on Governors Island. A remarkable, skillfully rendered and completely original mid-nineteenth century view of New York City.

Billing 1866, l.l.; 16 x 24 inches Other Notes: Frederick Billing was born in Germany and encouraged by his family to become a businessman. In 1856, he immigrated to New York to seek his fortune and to take up painting despite his family's disapproval. After serving with his brother in the Union Army during the Civil War, Billing opened a brokerage firm Hagen and Billing, while he continued to paint. His friend and teacher, German born Hudson River school painter, Johann Hermann Carmiencke (1810-1867), encouraged Billing to continue painting. Billing's first landscapes were European views painted from memory, before he moved to New York landscapes in the style of the Hudson River School painters. For health reasons, Billing moved west in the late 1870's, where he met the venerated American artist Thomas Moran. Having never returned to Europe, Billing's 1866 View of Mount Vesuvius with the Bay of Naples is clearly inspired by an almost identical, but much larger, work created in 1860 by his mentor Johann Hermann Carmiencke.
