        NO RESERVE Billings (Robert William, 1813-1874) Dirleton Castle; Octagonal Room in Dirleton Castle, two works, pen and brown ink with watercolour over traces of pencil, on wove paper with ruled black ink border, neatly presented on card mount with ink annotations and early attribution to Billings, the first mentioned 175 x 235 mm. (6 7/8 x 9 1/4 in), the latter 215 x 170 mm. (8 1/2 x 6 3/4 in), unframed, [circa 1830-1850s]; together with three pen and ink landscapes with wash executed in the manner of Heneage Finch, 4th Earl of Aylesbury, possibly by his son the 5th Earl of Aylesbury or another family member, two dated on mount '1834', the other '1829', various sizes, all unframed (5). ⁂ Billings was apprenticed to the topographical draughtsman John Britton for seven years, starting when he was aged just 13. He later focussed more exclusively on his architectural practice, and was based in Putney from 1865. Billings drawings and watercolours are held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and a group of proof state etchings after his drawings are held in the British Museum.
