Thomas Birch (American, 1779–1851) Chain Bridge at Falls of Schuylkill Oil on canvas 31 1/8 x 41 1/8 in. (79 x 104.4 cm.) Provenance The Williamson Family Collection, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Collection of Stephanie Kenyon and Don Webster, Maryland, circa 1982. Schwarz Gallery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by 1998. Acquired directly from the above. Private Collection. Christie's, New York, sale of May 21, 2001, lot 24. Acquired directly from the above sale. The Papageorge Family Collection, Carversville, Pennsylvania. Exhibited "First Annual Exhibition," Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, May 1811, no. 49 (as View of the Chain Bridge and Falls of Schuylkill, five miles from Philadelphia). Literature T. Lewis, American Paintings, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1998, no. 7 (illustrated). Note The Chain Bridge at Falls of Schuylkill (now East Falls) was the second bridge to ever spread across the Schuylkill River. Erected in 1808, this iron-chain suspension bridge was placed north of Philadelphia, about five miles upstream from Timothy Palmer’s Permanent Bridge (1804). Designed by James Finley, it had a span of about 200 feet, and became the model for future suspension bridges in the country. Its chain cables were carried across the river thanks to three pairs of A-shaped wooden towers, two of which were placed on its eastern and western embankments, while another sat atop a stone pier built in the middle of the river. Despite the national attention the bridge received, its physical existence did not last since, after many incidents, it collapsed on January 16, 1816 as reported by the United States Gazette: “The Chain Bridge at the Falls of Schuylkill fell down about five o’clock on Wednesday morning. This unfortunate occurrence is said to have been occasioned by the great weight of snow which remained on it, and a decayed piece of timber. There was no person on the bridge when it fell.” Today, the Reading Railroad Viaduct has replaced it. Thomas Birch painted the Chain Bridge twice in the same year, thus proving his fascination with the city’s fast transformation, introducing state-of-the-art technologies into its old perimenter to make it one of America's top industralist hubs.

Birch Oil of Boston, c. 1832

        Est: $175,000 - $250,000

BIRCH, Thomas (1779 - 1851). View of Boston from the Ship House, west end of the Navy Yard. Oil on canvas. c. 1832 or later. Canvas size: 20 1/4" x 30". Provenance: Sotheby's, New York, December 3, 2003, lot 97, as View of the Delaware River). Acquired at the above sale by the present owner. Considered one of the earliest American marine painters, Birch was the son of prominent enamelist and miniature painter, William Russell Birch (1755-1834). Father and son immigrated to Philadelphia from England in 1794 and by 1806 Thomas started accepting commissions for portraits and painting the marine subjects for which he would become best known. His specialties were his ship portraits, seascapes and sea battles of the War of 1812. In the 1830s, Birch turned his attention to topographic views of the harbors of major cities. He was particularly interested in portraying the ships and people who plied these waters and was one of the first artists to make the effort to depict watercraft with a high degree of accuracy. Since he was not a sailor himself, he consulted with sailors and officers at Philadelphia's wharf side to tutor him about the technical aspects of ship construction and to criticize his attempts. Birch remained in Philadelphia all of his life and the subject matter for most of his work is related to that city, but on occasion he did travel to New York, New Jersey and Delaware to paint views of these locations. Although a few works by him of New England do exist, he is not known to have traveled there. For example, he painted an early view of Nantucket, although it is unlikely he ever visited the island. It is thought that in his views of locations farther afield than he ventured, he would use the topographical features of engravings or works of other artists. This is not surprising, given the pains he took to make his compositions as authentic and accurate as possible from the standpoint of shipping vessels or the topography of the places he knew well. An engraving and watercolor of Boston with the same topographical composition by William James Bennett dated circa 1832 are in the I.N. Phelps Stokes Collection in the Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Division of Art, Prints and Photographs of the New York Public Library, (Cf. Gloria Gilda Deak, Picturing America, 1988, vol. I, p. 274, no. 407 and vol. II, no. 407). While the sky line of Boston and the building and pier to the left are identical to the engraving, the ships and activity in the harbor are Birch's own composition, with numerous sea vessels and figures engaged in their everyday pursuits on a calm and peaceful day. Characteristic of Birch, he animates the scene with the repetitive motion of the waves. As John Wilmerding has noted, Birch was a master "in understanding the fluid movements of waves and reproducing the luminosity of light reflected on the water." (Alan Granby, A Yachtsman's Eye: The Glen S. Foster Collection of Marine Paintings, New York, 2004, pp. 139 and 158).

        Est: $30,000 - $40,000

THOMAS BIRCH Pennsylvania, 1779-1851 "A Treacherous Cove". Circa 1830. Signed and dated indistinctly lower right "T. Birch 18...". Titled on frame plaque. Provenance: Collection of Mrs. George Arden, New York. Christie's, Sale 1257, July 29, 2003, Lot #153. One of, if not the first American marine painters, Thomas Birch, was born in London and immigrated to the United States with his father, engraver and enamel miniaturist William Russell Birch, in 1794. The father and son worked together as William Birch and Son in Philadelphia, notably designing and engraving a subscription series of topographic views of the city that were purchased by the likes of John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. Thomas Birch painted figural and ship portraits before the War of 1812, during which he became known for his depictions of naval battles. He is said to have produced the paintings as quickly after the battle as he could. He also painted dramatic shipwreck scenes, as seen here, purportedly based on the accounts of the survivors. In the 1830s he began painting landscapes, developing a reputation for his snow scenes filled with skating and sleigh riding. He also designed coins for the U.S. Mint. From an Important Private Collection, Greenwich, Connecticut. Oil on canvas, oval 31" x 36". Framed 37" x 43".
