The painting is signed and dated lower left ‘C. Birckenstaedt. 1856‘. It is in very good condition with only minor signs of age. The stretcher frame measures 59 x 82 cm while the framed dimensions are 71 x 94 cm. Carl Birckenstädt (1805-1856) Carl Birckenstädt was born in Northern Germany, in Rostock. He is one of the few artists who studied under the important Norwegian and Dresden-based early romantic painter Johan Christian Clausen Dahl. Birckenstädt`s oeuvre also shows influences of Ludwig Richter. Working for the grand dukes of Mecklenburg, he first lived in Bad Doberan but moved to Rostock later.
