        JOHN WHITMORE (1948 - ) Black Bird III. Charcoal, crayon and wash on cream wove paper, circa 1973. 1140x890 mm; 45x35 inches. 5 inch repaired vertical tear, upper edge. Provenance: private California collection. John Whitmore is a figurative artist who became known for realist and large-scale works on paper in the late 1960s. He was an early member and teacher at the Studio Watts Workshop, Los Angeles, founded by James Woods and Guy Miller in 1964. Whitmore showed at the Otis Art Institute of Los Angeles in 1975, and his work was included in the Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Company collection. His first work at auction was an oil painting from the Golden State collection sold at Swann Galleries on October 4, 2007.
