Stephen Bird (b.1964) - Painter, sculptor and ceramist, born in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, who gained an honours degree in fine art at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee, 1983–7, with postgraduate studies at Cyprus College of Art, Lemba, Paphos, 1987–8. Awards included Mitchell Painting Prize, travels to Barcelona, Spain, 1984; Ian Eadie Memorial Award, to Netherlands and Spain, 1985; Duncan of Drunfaulk Travel Award, to Italy, 1986; Elizabeth Greenshields Memorial Award, to Cyprus and Spain, 1987; Paper Works, Seagate Gallery, 2nd Prize, to Thailand, 1994; and Eaton Fund for Artists and Mott McDonald Painting Prize, Aberdeen Artists Annual, to New York, both 1997. Was artist-in-residence, Wysing Arts, Cambridge, 1998. Commissions included sculpture for Whitfield, Dundee, from the District Council, a community arts project, 1998; joint work with Neil Irons to make ceramic mural at Charles Square, Old Street, for Hackney Borough Council, 1999; and exterior ceramic sculpture for the Mexican Consulate country residence, Perthshire, 2001.
