Thomas Bishop o/c New Jersey Lighthouse 1879: A large oil on canvas by Thomas Bishop (Philadelphia 1858-1883) who exhibited landscapes at PAFA. The subject is a lighthouse on the New Jersey coast, almost certainly Absecon (based on the color pattern on the shaft), the beach, a breakwater and scrub bushes and trees. An artist sits under an umbrella, sketching the lighthouse. Signed T Bishop and dated 1878 in lower right. In period gilt gesso frame. Cleaned by Steven Erisoty in August 1996. Frame was restored by Michael Stone. Provenance: Robert A Goldstein; Alderfer Auction 23 May 1996 Lot #204. Size: stretcher is 20" X 36" frame is 45" X 28.5". CONDITION: Paint surface has all-over craquelure and minor stretcher marks, but paint surface is solid. Frame has lost gesso elements in transit and is somewhat delicate.
