    • Abraham Bisschop, A Red Macaw, Guinea Fowl, a Silver Pheasant and other Exotic Birds in a Park
      May. 16, 2024

Abraham Bisschop, A Red Macaw, Guinea Fowl, a Silver Pheasant and other Exotic Birds in a Park

      Est: €25,000 - €35,000

This large and highly decorative canvas is fully in the tradition of Dutch avian painting, which was extremely successful in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Abraham Bisschop (Busschop), the last son of Cornelis Bisschop, was a painter at the Danish court and a member of the Middelburg Guild as of 1715. Besides portraits and decorative works for large houses, he mainly created scenes of birds. We find all the characteristics of Bisschop's style in this painting: domestic and exotic birds mingle in a large-format composition depicting an imaginary environment interspersed with classical architecture. In this, Abraham Bisschop follows the masters of this genre, especially Melchior de Hondecoeter. With comparable talent, the outstanding colourist renders the plumage of the birds with softness and lightness. We would like to thank Dr Fred Meijer for confirming the attribution (written communication based on a photograph dated 15th September 2013). He references the recurring motif of the silver pheasant in Bisschop's works.

Bisschop. Abraham Bisschop (1660-1731), Birds in a Landscape

      Est: $8,000 - $12,000

Abraham Bisschop (1660-1731), Birds in a Landscape oil on canvas (lined), signed and dated at lower left "A. Bisschop 1695," housed in an ornate carved and gilt wood frame with gallery plaque. Born in Dordrecht, Abraham Bisschop was the youngest son of Cornelis Bisschop (1630-1674). While his father was known for his figural works, Abraham gained fame as a painter of fowl in landscapes. Abraham Bisschop (also Busschop) was one of several Dutch artists during the late 17th and early 18th century who specialized in painting live native and exotic fowl. These artists were often commissioned by rich burghers who collected and displayed these beautiful birds on their extensive estates. These paintings were prized for their realistic rendering of color and texture. In addition to paintings on canvas, artists like Bisschop and d'Hondecoeter, another famed fowl artist, painted on panels incorporated into the ornate Rococo architecture of grand Dutch palaces and homes. (see RDK catalogue and DUTCH PAINTING 1600-1800 by Seymour Slive, pp 291-292). SS 27.25 x 35 in.; DOA 36 x 42.5 in. Mrs. Arthur W. Levy (early North Carolina Museum of Art board member) to Mrs. Thomas H. Briggs, both of Raleigh, North Carolina. French & Company, New York, NY.

A TURKEY, PEACOCK, A CHICKEN WITH HIS CHICKS BESIDE A CLASSICAL FOUNTAIN IN A LANDSCAPE measurements note 69 3/4 by 48 1/2 in.; 177.5 by 123 cm. signed lower right on the fountain A. Bisschop f. oil on canvas PROVENANCE Private collection, England, from whom purchased by Raphael Valls, Ltd. NOTE Bisschop was an extremely versatile artist, who excelled in a broad range of painting styles, such as portraits, large scale wall decoration and bird pieces. The present picture is an oustanding example of the latter category, in which the artist acknowledges the importance of Melchior d'Hondecoeter. Indeed, in comparing this picture with lot 106 in this sale, it is clear that Bisschop adopted a number of characteristics of his predecessor's mature style. This is especially striking in the choice of setting, and in the grouping of such species as the turkey and the hen. Bisschop can also be said to have ascribed human emotions to the birds he depicts: the peacock strikes a proud pose in accordance with one of the most common associations with the species in Western culture, and the hen nervously watches over her chicks, while the turkey casts a disdainful and slightly threatening look at the clacking hatchlings.
