    KARL BITTER CARVED WOODEN ANGEL SCULPTURE

    BITTER, Karl Theodore Francis, Austrian, (1867-1915) CARVED WOODEN ANGEL SCULPTURE: Richly carved quarter-sawn oak. Purchased at Christie's “All Angels Church Auction” held on November 30,1978 NYC. Statue measures 45.5” tall and 18” wide, base measures 35.5” tall and 12.25” wide. Overall, 81" h. Bitter was one of the foremost architectural sculptors working in the US at the turn of the 20th Century. The pulpit and Choir Rail from New Yorks “All Angels Church” (demolished 1978) now resides in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

    KARL THEODORE FRANCIS BITTER (Austrian/American, 1867-1915) SEATED FEMALE NUDE FIGURE 1891; bronze signed and dated Bitter 91, side of bronze; inscribed Roman Bronze Works NY, back base of bronze height 9 3/4 in. Provenance: Richard Morris Hunt, by descent in the family to the current owner. Other Notes: Karl Bitter is best known for his architectural sculpture work, including the East Doors and Tympanum of the Trinity Church in New York City. Discovered by famed architect to New York's rich and famous, Richard Morris Hunt (American, 1827-1895), Bitter quickly gained notoriety in America and was appointed sculptor director of many of the country's expositions from 1893 until his premature death in 1915.
