          Hans Bitterlich (1860 - 1949) - a bust of Empress Elisabeth (Sisi), circa 1905

          Life-sized bust of bronzed terra-cotta. Strictly frontal depiction of the middle aged Empress. The pedestal signed on the right side "Hans Bitterlich". The surface slightly worn, the lower rim of the pedestal with smaller chips. Height 71 cm. Hans Bitterlich (1860 - 1949), Viennese sculptor. Probably his most famous work of art is the Empress Elisabeth monument in the Viennese Volksgarten, created between 1904 and 1907. In 1943 he was awarded the Goethe Medal for Arts and Sciences. Condition: II

Burnished bronze. 2 large hanging figures: Perseus with winged helmet and head of the gorgon Medusa and Hercules with a lion's skin. H 74 and 84 cm. W 47 and 45 cm. BITTERLICH, H. (Hans Bitterlich, 1860 Wien 1949), Österreich um 1880/1900. Brünierte Bronze. 2 grosse Hängefiguren: Perseus mit Flügelhelm und Haupt der Gorgo Medusa und Herkules mit Löwenfell. H 74 bzw. 84 cm. B 47 bzw. 45 cm. Provenienz: Privatsammlung, Deutschland. Der Bildhauer H. Bitterlich studierte bei Edmund Hellmer und Kaspar von Zumbusch und war 1901 bis 1931 Professor an der Akademie der bildenden Künste in Wien. Zu seinen bekanntesten Werken gehören das Gutenberg-Denkmal am Lugeck und das Denkmal für Kaiserin Elisabeth im Volksgarten. 1943 erhielt Bitterlich die Goethe-Medaille für Kunst und Wissenschaft.
