CHARLES BITTINGER (American, 1879 - 1970). Ocean View, 1935, Oil on canvas-board. Signed, dated ("12 July 1935") and dedicated lower left hand corner. Framed. ARTIST PROFILE: Charles Bittinger was born on June 27, 1879. Originally from Washington D.C., he studied for two years at MIT, with the intention of becoming a scientist. He then switched to art, and went off to Paris to study at various French art schools, among them the École des Beaux-Arts. There he married a concert singer named Edith Gay, and returned to the U.S. to study at the Art Students League. During World War I, he was one of the artists who studied at a camouflage training school established in New York by William Andrew MacKay (Yates 1919). He also worked for the U.S. Navy at Eastman Kodak Laboratories with physicist Loyd A. Jones on the development of low visibility ship camouflage. Between the wars, Bittinger relocated to Washington D.C., and began experimenting with the use of scientific techniques for producing novel works of art. In 1929, he painted three murals for the Franklin Institute, depicting stages in the life of Benjamin Franklin. When observed in incandescent light, each painting appeared to be a certain picture, but when viewed under ultraviolet light, it revealed an entirely different picture. In 1935, Bittinger exhibited another work in which Charles Lindbergh's famous transatlantic flight appeared under normal viewing conditions, but the same painting became the Mona Lisa when viewed through an optical instrument that Bittinger had invented. - 12" x 16"; Frame: 17" x 22"

Mount Vernon Impressionist Oil on Artist Board by Charles Bittinger (1879-1970). In wood frame measures 21"x17"x1 1/4". Weight 2 pds 10 oz. PROVENANCE: A Charleston SC Private Estate. Washington, D.C., artist Charles Bittinger (1879-1970) studied at MIT and l'Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. He worked as a camouflage painter in both world wars and was official artist for the 1937 National Geographic Eclipse Expedition to Canton Island and for Operation Crossroads in 1946. Although he produced broadly-painted, impressionist landscapes, New York-based artist Charles Bittinger is best remembered for his delicate, sumptuous paintings of interiors, generally peopled by elegantly-dressed young women. He was celebrated in Boston as a frequent exhibitor at the St. Botolph Club and the Guild of Boston Artists, as well as for his splendid interior view of the Boston Athenaeum, purchased by New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1924.

Bittinger lived in New York from 1907-1914; Duxbury, Massachusetts from 1915 to 1929; and Washington DC from 1929 to 1970 where he was active in the Cosmos Club. He studied in Paris at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, the Sorbonne, and the Academy Delecluse, and with Jean Paul Laurens and Jean Leon Gerome. In New York, he studied at the Art Students League. He was a member of the Peconic Art Colony, spending summers in the Indian Neck area of Peconic, Long Island.

Bittinger - Versailles Interiors," International Studio, vol. 59, no. 235, Sep. 1910, pp. xli-xliv, illus. p. xlii Exhibited: Pittsburgh, PA, Carnegie Institute, The Carnegie International, 1908, no. 338 (as L'Oeil de Boeuf - Versailles) Washington, DC, The Corcoran Gallery of Art, Second Exhibition of Contemporary American Paintings, 1908 A letter from the artist to the purchaser of the present work is affixed to its frame. It reads, "Dear Mrs. Craigmiles: It was with much pleasure I learned the other day from Miss Schirmer that you had bought the Oeil du Boeuf [sic]. During the two years that I worked at Versailles I painted four interiors -- and although it is very difficult to decide such matters -- I think that you have selected the best one -- I know it is Mrs. Massin's and Mrs. Bittinger's favorite. Mrs. Bittinger joins me in kindest regards. Very truly yours, Charles Bittinger March 30." Of the four paintings depicting Versailles, two were later shown in 1908 at the Carnegie Institute annual exhibition. The second of the two works, The Library of the Dauphin (Bibliotheque du Dauphin, Versailles), was acquired by the St. Louis Art Museum in 1923. The Chamber of L'Oeil de Bouef (or the Bull's Eye Salon) at the Palace at Versailles was initially part of the queen's quarters, but Louis XIV converted it to part of the King's apartments in 1701. Courtiers would wait in this space prior to being shown into the bedchamber of the King. The room is named for its famed oval window, but it is also notable for its paintings by Jacopo Bassano. In an article on Bittinger in International Studio, Floyd W. Triggs wrote, "To Versailles then, came Charles F. Bittinger,...[who] is by nature extraordinarily sensitive to beauty.... The beauty of the Palace of Versailles, gorgeous, yet in its untenanted condition sombre, at first overwhelmed then filled him with a steady enthusiasm. For two years Bittinger, with undiminished joyfulness and painstaking patience lived and painted among the glories of Versailles.... In painting the interiors of Versailles, he was moved by no interest in history nor historic ornament. He simply painted the things he saw for the beauty which lay in them. The veined marble of a mantelpiece, the iridescent shimmer of a crystal chandelier, the exquisite chiseling on a metal mount, the tints of a piece of tapestry in a chairback, each beauty is after its own kind, subordinate to the beauty of the whole. All this beauty of form, color and texture, Bittinger has felt and faithfully, even lovingly, presented." [Floyd W. Triggs, "Charles F. Outstanding oil on canvas interior scene shows an elegant young woman seated in a tall, French armchair wearing an elegant, satin white gown with magenta shawl. She looks toward the viewer and holds a small teacup. On the mahogany Hepplewhite inlaid card table rests a lacquered tray with a oriental export pink decorated teapot, creamer and cup and saucer. Also on the table is a large Canton bowl filled with blue and yellow pansies. The backdrop is a curtained wall in blue with the edge of a framed painting and grandfather clock. Light shines from above, lighting up her and the teapot. Signed lower left and dated "1918". Housed in a fine gesso-decorated gilt replacement frame. SIZE: 32" x 26". CONDITION: Relined.
