(1848 Montmartre/Paris - 1929 ebenda) Gartenstillleben mit Sonnenblumen und einem Korb voller Rosen Großformatiges Werk Bivas, dessen stille, kontemplative, poetische, menschenleere Landschaften unterschiedliche Stilelemente des Postimpressionismus und Realismus mit einer starken naturalistischen Komponente verbinden. Neben einigen Gartenimpressionen und Blumenstillleben malte Biva mit Vorliebe baumbestandene Fluss- oder Seeufer mit üppiger Vegetation. Der aus einer Künstlerfamilie stammende Biva studierte seit 1873 an der École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, u. a. beim realistischen Maler Léon Tanzi und bei dem angesehenen Landschaftsmaler Alexandre Nozal, dessen künstlerischer Weg vom Impressionismus zum Postimpressionismus führte. Überdies besuchte Biva die renommierte Académie Julian bei William-Adolphe Bouguereau, Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant und Jules Joseph Lefebvre. Seit 1879 stellte Biva regelmäßig auf dem Salon aus, wo er in den 1890er Jahren Anerkennung und mehrere Auszeichnungen gewann, 1900 erhielt er auf der Weltausstellung in Paris eine Bronze-Medaille, im selben Jahr nahm ihn die Ehrenlegion als Ritter auf. Anfang des 20. Jhs. begann Biva überdies im 1897 gegründeten Salon d'Hiver auszustellen, 1923 wählte man ihn zu dessen ersten Vizepräsidenten. Condition: The painting is in a good condition, showing minor abrasion within the depiction as well as along the edges. The paint surface is slightly darkened; the varnish has been renewed. The canvas shows slight pressure marks from the stretcher and is slightly wavy. The inspection under UV light reveals old strokes of retouching to the right margin, as well as a finger print in the varnish to the left area. The thick varnish most likely conceals further areas of old retouching. The frame is minimally worn. The dimensions of the painting are 27 x 36.5 cm, while the frame measures 50 x 60 cm. Henri Biva (1848-1929) The French painter Henri Biva devoted himself primarily to plein air painting in the nearby western suburbs of Paris. His painting style features post-impressionistic, realistic and naturalistic components. Biva grew up in a family of artists in Montmartre. In the early 1870s he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under the guidance of Léon Tanzi and Alexandre Nozal. In addition, he attended the classes of William-Adolphe Bouguereau, Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant and Joseph Lefebvre at the Académie Julian. Since the late 1870s Biva exhibited his paintings in Paris salons. Around the turn of the century he was already known to a wide audience. In 1923 he was appointed vice president of the winter salons. Work of Biva are in major French museum collections, including the Musée du Luxembourg in Paris. The paint surface is slightly darkened; the varnish has been renewed. The canvas shows slight pressure marks from the stretcher and is slightly wavy. The inspection under UV light reveals old strokes of retouching to the right margin, as well as a finger print in the varnish to the left area. The thick varnish most likely conceals further areas of old retouching. The frame is minimally worn. The dimensions of the painting are 27 x 36.5 cm, while the frame measures 50 x 60 cm. Henri Biva (1848-1929) The French painter Henri Biva devoted himself primarily to plein air painting in the nearby western suburbs of Paris. His painting style features post-impressionistic, realistic and naturalistic components. Biva grew up in a family of artists in Montmartre. In the early 1870s he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under the guidance of Léon Tanzi and Alexandre Nozal. In addition, he attended the classes of William-Adolphe Bouguereau, Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant and Joseph Lefebvre at the Académie Julian. Since the late 1870s Biva exhibited his paintings in Paris’ salons. Around the turn of the century he was already known to a wide audience. In 1923 he was appointed vice president of the winter salons. Work of Biva are in major French museum collections, including the Musée du Luxembourg in Paris.
