(Albano 1845–1922 Bad Hall) Bon Marché with Aristides Baltazzi (1853–1914), signed, dated Julius von Blaas 1906, oil on canvas, 100 x 115 cm, framed Provenance: Family of Aristide Baltazzi (1853–1914) until 2021; Private Collection, Austria. The four Baltazzi brothers, descendants of a Greek banking dynasty, were among the most distinguished equestrians during the final decades of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. Their remarkable achievements in horse racing quickly earned them recognition in elite social circles and at the imperial court, where they became collectively known as the ‘Baltazzi Brothers’. Aristide Baltazzi (1853–1914) was a member of the board of directors of the renowned Vienna Jockey Club until 1884. Shortly thereafter, he established a thoroughbred breeding programme in Napajedl, northern Moravia, which went on to become one of the most successful stud farms in the Danube Monarchy. Aristide and his brother Alexander (1850–1914) jointly owned the exceptional stallion Kisbér, who achieved the rare distinction of winning both the Epsom Derby and the Grand Prix de Paris. The English thoroughbred Bon Marché, depicted in this painting, was born in 1901 as part of Aristide’s breeding programme and boasted an illustrious lineage. His renowned grandsire, Bend Or, secured numerous major racing victories. Bon Marché, an elegant chestnut, finished second in the 1904 German Derby. In his portrayal, von Blaas highlights the horse’s distinctive markings—a narrow blaze and a white pastern on the back left leg—while setting the scene in a spacious stable, where the stallion attentively turns towards his breeder. Beyond their equestrian legacy, the Baltazzi family also became known for another reason: Mary Vetsera (1871–1889), who died alongside Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria (1858–1889), was the brothers’ niece.
