    • Attributed to Julius von Blaas - Portrait of a bay horse, full length, in a paddock
      Feb. 27, 2024

Attributed to Julius von Blaas - Portrait of a bay horse, full length, in a paddock

      Est: £1,000 - £1,500

Attributed to Julius von Blaas,  Italian 1845-1923 Portrait of a bay horse, full length, in a paddock;  oil on canvas board, 41.5 x 57.7 cm.  Provenance:  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  Von Blaas studied under his father, the Austrian painter Karl von Blaas (1815-1894), however, unlike his father, he focused principally on equestrian subjects. The present work exhibits a convincing similarity to Von Blaas's output, with the composition focusing the viewer's attention on the majestic horse with a gleaming coat, set apart from the diminutive figures of horses beyond. One example of Von Blaas's work which strongly resembles the present lot both in handling and composition is the portrait of Prince Alois von Liechtenstein on Horseback, in the Princely Collections, Liechtenstein (that example is dated 1904).

      Jun. 15, 2021

      Heimkehr der Adelsleute

      Est: €10,000 - €12,000

Oil on Canvas Signed lower left 25 x 31,5 in framed The portrait of the homecoming of the aristocrats is pictorial and realistic. The nobles are shown on their beautiful horses, in neat clothing and in elegant posture. In contrast to this stand the servant and the boy, who appear in poor clothes and a stooped posture. The barren landscape and the dense cloud cover are remarkably detailed and pictorially depicted. Julius von Blaas academic training, his father's training in history painting and his commissions at the Viennese court determined his choice of motifs for an aristocratic way of life.

Oil on wooden plate Signed lower right 14,4 x 10,6 in framed The work of the rider is painted entirely in the courtly style and shows a nobleman on his horse with a drawn sword. Ready to fight and in splendid clothing, he looks ahead with his head held high. Julius von Blaas was extremely successful with his portraits of riders and horses in aristocratic society. Committed to academic fine painting, extremely lifelike representations were created.

      Est: €6,000 - €8,000

Oil on Canvas laminated on wooden plate Signed lower right 9,3 x 13,1 in framed Extremely fresh colors. Small color chips do not disturb the overall impression. In addition to historical, genre and battle pictures, Julius von Blaas also created depictions of animals. His painting is located in the academic manner. This portrait of the cow is very realistic and lifelike. The appearance is presented convincingly and authentically. The landscape is painterly designed and reduced in such a way that the animal stands out as the central motif.
