      White Star Line. ca. 1914.

      Est: $2,000 - $2,500

ARTIST: MONTAGUE BIRREL BLACK (1884-1964) SIZE: 25 1/2 x 40 1/8 in./64.8 x 102 cm PRINTER: Liverpool Printing DESCRIPTION: This poster is undated, but the smokestacks give it away. The only White Star liners to possess four smokestacks were the ships of the Olympic class: the RMS Titanic, the RMS Olympic, and the RMS Britannic. Posters similar to this one noted the Titanic and the Olympic by name; while the Britannic also sank, in 1915, the Olympic continued to sail until 1935, earning the name "Old Reliable." Since Black has a consistent style, it's difficult to date this particular piece, but White Star posters from the '20s and '30s tend to have a newer, crisper style to them, so it is likely this poster was printed between 1912, the sinking of the Titanic, and the beginning of World War I. Est: $700 - $1,000

MONTAGUE BIRRELL BLACK (1884-1964) THE BLUE FUNNEL LINE / TO SOUTH AFRICA AUSTRALIA STRAITS & CHINA. Circa 1920s. 40¼x25 inches, 102¼x63½ cm. Condition A: minor repaired tears and replaced losses at edges; text banner affixed to bottom. Montague Birrell Black produced many of the paintings, postcards and posters for the White Star Line through the 1920s. He also worked for other shipping companies, like the French Line and Blue Star Line, the London Underground and the British Railway companies. In many instances, he was able to capture painting-like detail in his posters, as in this example, with the intense, luminous depiction of the sunset and the twilight shades of the ocean. For one of Britain's largest shipping companies, the Blue Funnel Line remains far less known than its contemporaries, because they had substantially fewer posters produced than other companies.

French Line / Normandie. ca. 1938.

      Est: $7,000 - $9,000

ARTIST: MONTAGUE BIRREL BLACK (1884-1964) SIZE: 25 x 40 in./63.5 x 101.5 cm DESCRIPTION: Black offers an entirely different perspective on the SS Normandie from Cassandre’s image (see previous lot), but one that nevertheless showcases the ship's grandeur as she slides past a lighthouse and tug beneath a tumultuous sky. In 1938, she was beaten in the race to the fastest transatlantic crossing, so Black shifted the text’s focus to the overall service proposition: “NO better ships, better seamen, better cuisine, better service.” Rare! Est: $5,000 - $7,500

MONTAGUE BIRRELL BLACK (1884-1964) FRENCH LINE C.G.T / NORMANDIE. Circa 1938. 39 3/4x25 inches, 101x63 1/2 cm. Condition A-: minor expert overpainting and restoration in margins; creases and minor restoration in image. Montague Birrell Black was an accomplished ship portraitist and produced many of the paintings, postcards and posters for the White Star Line through the 1920s. He also worked for other transportation companies, like the French Line and Blue Star Line, the London Underground and British Railway. This snapshot of the Normandie sailing out to sea, past a lighthouse, gives a wonderful impression of the monolithic size of the vessel. Seen from a low angle, the ship towers over everything and is in fact, too big to even fit inside the frame of the poster. Weallans p. 151.

Original Travel Poster Largs Ayrshire British Railways

      Est: £150 - £300

Original vintage travel poster for Largs Ayrshire issued by British Railways - Great artwork by Montague Birrell Black (1884-1964) depicting the seaside in Largs featuring a sandy beach, boats in the sea, seaside green, promenade, trees, town and churches. Bold lettering in the border below alongside town coats of arms -For a happy healthy holiday , Guide free from town clerk, Largs, Ayrshire. Description Large is a town on the Firth of Clyde in North Ayrshire, Scotland, about 33 miles from Glasgow. Printed in Great Britain by London Lithographic Co London. British Railways (BR), which from 1965 traded as British Rail, was the state-owned company that operated most of the overground rail transport in Great Britain between 1948 and 1997. It was formed from the nationalisation of the "Big Four" British railway companies and lasted until the gradual privatisation of British Rail, in stages between 1994 and 1997. Originally a trading brand of the Railway Executive of the British Transport Commission, it became an independent statutory corporation in 1962 designated as the British Railways Board. After the grouping of 1923 under the Railways Act 1921, there were four large railway companies, each dominating its own geographic area: the Great Western Railway (GWR), the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS), the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) and the Southern Railway (SR). During World War I the railways were under state control, which continued until 1921. Complete nationalisation had been considered, and the Railways Act 1921 is sometimes considered as a precursor to that, but the concept was rejected. Nationalisation was subsequently carried out after World War II, under the Transport Act 1947. This Act made provision for the nationalisation of the network, as part of a policy of nationalising public services by Clement Attlee's Labour Government. British Railways came into existence as the business name of the Railway Executive of the British Transport Commission (BTC) on 1 January 1948 when it took over the assets of the Big Four. Good condition, loss on bottom left corner, small losses on bottom right corner, backed on japan paper Country of issue: UK, designer: Montague Birrell Black, size (cm): 102x64, year of printing: 1940s

Black and Fred Pansing were two of the artists who produced most of the paintings and postcards for the White Star Line through the 1920s. This image of the Olympic and the Titanic passing at sea (the Titanic in the distance), based on a painting by Black, was also used as a postcard. The poster originally had a green border bearing the caption, "White Star Line / Olympic 45,000 tons - Titanic 45,000 tons the Largest Steamers in the world." Printed in a relatively small number to hang in White Star Offices, only a few copies have survived. Most likely the borders were removed from copies of the original poster after the catastrophic maiden voyage of the Titanic.

Condition A-: minor abrasions and light foxing in margins; slight darkening in upper right margin. Mounted on thin paper. Montague Birrell Black produced many of the paintings, postcards and posters for the White Star Line through the 1920s. He also worked for other transportation companies, like the French Line and Blue Star Line, the London Underground and the British Railway. The Dominion Line had its roots in a company founded in 1870 called Liverpool & Mississippi Steamship Company, which changed its name to Mississippi & Dominion Steamship Company. Their original goal was to link New Orleans with Liverpool, which quickly abandoned in favor of a Canadian route. In 1902 the Dominion Line was bought out by a large shipping conglomerate which included the White Star Line. From 1908, the resulting White Star-Dominion Line ran passengers and freight to Canada, and remained in service until 1926, when the name was changed to White Star Line Canadian Service.

As a chauffeured car turns the corner, its headlights wash over a poster promoting White Star Line -- an image which overshadows in both size and brilliance the myriad other posters promoting alternative steamship companies.

MONTAGUE BIRRELL BLACK (1884-1964) [WHITE STAR LINE / OLYMPIC & TITANIC.] Circa 1910. 29x39 inches, 73 3/4x99 cm. Condition B+: losses at edges and in upper image; minor abrasions and staining in image; mounted to board. Framed in original White Star frame. Montague B. Black and Fred Pansing were two of the artists who produced most of the paintings and postcards for the White Star Line through the 1920s. This image of the Olympic and the Titanic passing at sea (the Titanic is in the distance), based on a painting by Black, was also used as a postcard.

Condition B+ / B: restoration along vertical fold; abrasions in image; repaired tears, wrinkles and restoration in margins. This is the only poster that Black designed for the London Underground. Of all of the posters he is credited with designing, this one stands alone as unique in its genre, both for the artist and for the entire spectrum of Underground posters commissioned by Frank Pick. It is a literal flight of fancy and one of the most unexpected and unusual of all the Underground posters of its era. With a science fiction theme that seems to presage Blade Runner, Black includes billboards and advertising in the scene whose messages further reinforce the futuristic setting, where the sky is filled with impressive towers and an array of flying machines. In addition to the visual splendor of the image, Black includes billboards and advertising in the scene which further add to the futuristic feeling. The only other Underground poster with a science fiction motif is Man Ray's poster London Transport - Keeps London Going, from 1938. rare/span

MONTAGUE BIRREL BLACK (1884 - ?) WHITE STAR LINE / "OLYMPIC & TITANIC." Circa 1910. 40x25 inches, 101 1/2x63 1/2 cm. Condition B: tears, creases and staining in margins and image; losses at edges; tape along edges and on verso. Paper. An exceptional artistic rendition of the Olympic, likely completed before the ship was officially launched. This image was clearly a favorite of the White Star Line publicity department, as it appeared on numerous forms of promotional material, including a postcard (issued some time in 1910) announcing that the Olympic had been launched on "Oct. 20, 1910" and that the Titanic, which was currently being built at Belfast, would "be in commission 1911." The image also appeared on menus, advertisements, a 2nd class passenger list on the Titanic and the cover of a 1911 souvenir edition of the Shipbuilder. Often mistaken as a poster of the Titanic itself, this is not the case. If the design was a portrait of the completed ship her name would appear on the bow. Furthermore, when the Titanic was launched she weighed 46,329 tons, heavier than her sister ship as a result of enclosing one of her upper promenade decks, a fact that would have been unknown to the publicity department before construction was finished. Finally, the enclosed upper deck is not depicted here. Still this is an extremely rare poster, with only a few copies having come up for auction over the past 25 years. Likely once the Titanic sank on April 15, 1912, the White Star Line would have pulled and destroyed as many of these posters as they could.
