Abstract from 'The Pink Series', circa 1967 oil on canvas laid to board: An accompanying letter from the artist: '9. 19 / to whom it may concern / this painting was bought of the artist (me) in approx: late 1960's, possibly 1967. At this time I did not sign work. It is part of a pink series also related to the sausage series. Most of these works are much smaller, this is an important larger work. Shortly after this series, I stopped work for a long period - mainly to give my daughter one of my kidneys, in what then was a landmark - parent to child transplant' (Dimensions: 60 x 62cm)

§ John Blackburn (British, b.1932) Brown Shapes on Ochre, 1964 signed on reverse "J Blackburn" oil on card h:32 w: 25 cm John Blackburn was born in 1932 in Luton and attended the Thanet School of Art and then went on to study at the Maidenhead School of Art (1950-1952). He then joined the National Service Royal Air Force in 1952 after which he moved to New Zealand for the following eight years. He then moved back to England in 1962. It was in 1961 that Jim Ede, founder of Kettles Yard, Cambridge, saw an exhibition of Blackburn's work at the Woodstock Gallery in London. Ede selected 31 paintings from the exhibition, 26 of which became part of the Kettle's Yard loan collection. Brown Shapes on Ochre and White, Grey and Black on Ochre Shapes both dated 1964 were originally part of a whole series of approximately 50 pieces, which is now referred to by the artist as the 'Early Kettle's Yard Gouaches'. The series, which was executed in the early 1960s on bits of cardboard with acrylic paint, was considered quite an original medium at the time and took several months to complete. The artist and his wife, Maude would go to Jim Ede's house every couple of weeks to hear the former curator's opinion on his latest works. The artist remembers what an incredible talent Ede had in taking a quick look at a work and immediately knowing its value. Jim would always select a couple for his Kettle's Yard collection and then promote the rest to Cambridge undergraduates and encourage them to purchase John's works. That is why many of John Blackburn's works can be now traced to locations in and around Cambridge.
