Dated: 1939 Notes: signed verso; framed; some surface dirt noted; small touch up noted just left of centre Reference: The artist was born in Vancouver and the family moved several times and ended up in Victoria. He knew both Emily Carr and Max Maynard at this time. He later attended the Vancouver School of Art in 1937-1939 before moving to San Francisco. It was prior to this move that the artist gave the painting to good family friends in British Columbia. In 1956 the artist moved to New York and it was in the mid sixties that he started making sculpture. His monumental and iconic X was exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington in 1967.
