        3 pp. 14x10½" original wrappers, which are detached. Front cover illustrated with a portrait of Bland, "the best Ethiopian song writer in the world," beneath which, ironically, is a typically racist drawing, depicting  African-Americans in church.  James Alan Bland was probably the first famous African-American composer, a Howard University graduate who became known as “The Prince of Negro Songwriters”, composing over 700 songs – including “O Dem Golden Slippers” and “Carry Me Back to Old Virginny”. Performing with a Black group in Europe for some 20 years, he was also called “The World’s Greatest Minstrel Man.” Original printings of his songs, such as this, are scarce. The lot also includes: Bland, James A. with [Colin] Cool Burgess, “In the Morning by the Bright Light” Songster. (NY, ca. 1880; “Favorite Dime Song Book” No. 94). Original printed wrappers, front wrapper with color portrait of singer. 61pp. of lyrics (no music) + 3pp. of publisher’s ads. Ironically, while few white Virginians knew that Bland, the composer of their favorite Reconstruction-era song was Black, Burgess, a caucasian “black-face” performer and Bland admirer, was sometimes thought to be Black. When Burgess shot a man in a New York bar who was having an affair with his estranged wife, the New York Times headline was:”Shot By A Negro Minstrel”. Many of the songs in the booklet are in stereotypic Negro dialect (“Dat Gay Old Nigger Ball”), but the title song was written and – notes Burgess - performed (to “unbounded applause”) by Bland.
