Oscar Florianus Bluemner (1867 - 1938) "West New York"

    Est: $1,500 - $2,500

Oscar Florianus Bluemner (1867 - 1938) Colored Pencil and Graphite, signed lower left in monogram and "West New York" dated 27, piece measures 11 x 7 inches and 23 x 20 inches w/frame. Originally purchased from James Graham & Sons but since reframed. Born near Hanover, Germany, Oscar Bluemner early followed in the architectural careers of his father and grandfather. In the early 1880s, he studied painting and architecture at the Royal Academy of Design in Berlin and then traveled to America hoping unsuccessfully for an architectural commission with the 1893 World Exposition in Chicago. He did win a competition in 1900 for the design of the courthouse in Bronx, New York, but his partner stole the commission from him. Eventually he won a lawsuit against the partner, but by then he had turned to painting and away from architecture. Bluemner first adopted the impressionist style and urban subject matter of Maurice Prendergast, but after a trip to Europe, his style changed drastically to that which was geometric and reflected Cubism and Futurism.

Oscar Bluemner German / American, (1867 - 1938) Harlem River, Mott Haven, 1916 charcoal, graphite, and crayon on paper Signed with initials, dated, and titled lower left. Exhibited: James Graham & Sons, NY; George Krevsky Gallery, CA Biography from the Archives of askART: Born near Hanover, Germany, Oscar Bluemner early followed in the architectural careers of his father and grandfather. His work was well received by the critics, especially when he was endorsed and promoted by Alfred Stieglitz who sponsored Bluemner's first American exhibition. However, sales were not strong during most of his career. As he suffered increasing poverty and poor health, he became more and more depressed and committed suicide in 1938. From 1926, he had lived in Braintree, Massachusetts. Source: Peter Falk, Who Was Who in American Art Matthew Baigell, Dictionary of American Art

    OSCAR BLUEMNER Lindhurst, New Jersey.

    Est: $1,500 - $2,500

OSCAR BLUEMNER Lindhurst, New Jersey. Color crayons on cream wove paper, 1911. 123x188 mm; 4 3/4x7 1/2 inches. Signed with the artist's monogram in crayon and dated and inscribed "Lindhurst NJ" in ink, lower right recto, and inscribed in ink, verso. Provenance: Private collection, Santa Monica, California. Bluemner (1867-1938), one America's finest Modernist colorists, was overlooked for the majority of his career. Now however his place alongside Georgia O'Keeffe, John Marin, Marsden Hartley and Max Weber--all fellow exhibitors at Alfred Stieglitz's "291" Gallery in New York--is understood and he ranks among the group of most modern and influential artists in America during the early 20th century. Developing a friendship with Stieglitz around 1911, and after a drawn-out litigation to rightfully claim his recognition and compensation for designing the Bronx, New York courthouse, Bluemner decided to turn completely to painting in 1912 and embarked on a seven month European voyage. Upon his return, after exposure to works by Paul Cézanne, Vincent van Gogh, as well as the Fauves and Cubists, Bluemner's work reflected a dramatic shift toward the bright, streamlined style that would define his work and parallel the developments made by other American modern artists during the early 20th century. Like Edward Hopper, Bluemner traveled widely along the east coast, in the countryside surrounding New York, and made numerous watercolor studies of landscapes and buildings, virtually all of which are devoid of human presence.
