Sara Metzner Boal (American, 1896-1979). Still Life. Oil on canvas, ca. 1925. Signed S. Boal on lower right. A wonderful still life painting by American artist Sara Metzner Boal. (See more on her biography in the extended description below.) The composition features a wonderful ensemble of objects: peacock feathers, an elegant copper pitcher with a ribbed body, and a framed painting with two white seabirds flanking a blue and yellow pinwheel motif. All is delineated with a vibrant palette and a style consistent with early 20th century explorations of the tenets of Post-Impressionism and Expressionism in both pictorial and abstract compositions. A fragment of an exhibition entry label remains on the verso. According to her obituary published in the New York Times, "A worker in oils, she had exhibited at the Academic Artists of Springfield, Mass., the Springfield Museum of Art and the Schoneman Gallery of Art in New York. Other paintings were on display at the 1964-65 New York World's Fair in the Belgian Pavilion and at the National Academy of Design from 1969 to 1971. Mrs. Boal, who also taught classes in art, received numerous awards, including the Norbury Memorial, the Kramer Montgomery Medal of Honor and first prize in landscape from the Ahde Arzt Gallery."
