Ferdinand Boberg For CG Hallberg Silver And Jewel Encrusted Ocean Themed Box

        Est: $2,000 - $3,000

A beautiful Ferdinand Boberg (Swedish, 1860-1946) for CG Hallberg Art Nouveau silver bell-shaped lidded box with a delightful ocean theme, featuring a baroque cultured mabe pearl inlaid sculptural crab on the top handle and relief depictions of fish and lobsters along the body with a spiraling waved texture adding a sense of movement and energy to the piece. The box is encrusted with marbled blue and white cabochon sapphires, and sprinkled with round faceted diamonds, reminiscent of bubbles and ocean foam, adding to the design. Marked underfoot. Provenance: The estate of a gentleman, Hamden, CT, a member of a prominent European banking family. Dimensions: 4 3/8" H x 3 1/2" DIA About the Artist: "Ferdinand Boberg was Sweden's most renowned architect and led the modern movement from circa 1900-1914, enjoying the patronage of the Swedish Royal family amongst many. His architecture, with its distinctive Swedish take on Art Nouveau, can still be seen in Stockholm and Sweden and his decorative arts are held by Nordiska Museet in Stockholm, as well as other museums throughout Europe. Today he is recognised as one of Swedens most important designers of the 20th century." "Boberg designed a few pieces in silver, most made by the leading Swedish silversmith C G Hallberg, and Boberg's most celebrated commissions was to design and lead the Swedish Craft and Design Fair in Stockholm in 1909. This was Sweden's domestic response to international fairs, such as those in Turin, Budapest and St Petersburg and also emulated Britain's Arts and Crafts Society Exhibition."
