(1890 Berlin - 1968 Helsingborg/Schweden) "S.S. Meteor in der Strasse von Messina". Originaltitel Blick auf das Schiff in der Straße von Messina mit dem schneebedeckten Ätna. Der in Deutschland, Finnland und Schweden tätige Marinemaler diente seit 1910 in der kaiserlichen Marine, 1912 begleitete er Kaiser Wilhelm II. als Matrose auf einer Mittelmeerreise und wurde von diesem entdeckt und gefördert. 1919 zog er nach Finnland, in der Zwischenkriegszeit arbeitete er auch öfters für Reedereien, Verlage und Zeitschriften. 1940-1944 war er auf allen Großen Deutschen Kunstausstellungen in München vertreten. Gouache/Papier. R. u. sign. u. betitelt. 26,5 x 34,5 cm. Rahmen. Die 1904 gebaute "Meteor" gehörte zu den Kreuzfahrtschiffen der HAPAG, 1914 wurde es von der Marine in Hamburg und Eckernförde genutzt und 1919 an Großbritannien übergeben. Seit 1922 fuhr die "Meteor" für eine norwegische Reederei, 1940 wurde sie durch die deutsche Kriegsmarine beschlagnahmt, 1945 sank sie bei einem Luftangriff. Gouache on paper. Signed and titled.

Adolf Bock (1890-1968) The Berlin-born painter Adolf Bock studied at the Royal School of Applied Arts and at the Art Academy Berlin. When traveling through many countries by ship, Bock discovered his passion for the depiction of ships. His works bear witnesses to an unerring sagacity and knowledge of an expert. From 1919-1939 Bock worked in Finland. Today, examples of his artistic output can be found in the Museum of Oceanography in Berlin. The varnish appears slightly dirty. Inspection under UV light reveals diffuse areas of retouching to the sky, as well as another fine retouching to a scratch in the lower right edge. The stretcher measures 38.5 x 58.5 cm. There is a small abrasion of material in the upper right inner edge of the frame. Besides, the frame is in good condition and measures 56 x 75.5 cm. Adolf Bock (1890 - 1968) war autodidaktischer Marinemaler, der als freiwilliger Matrose auf der "SMY Hohenzollern" durch Kaiser Wilhelm entdeckt und gefördert wurde. Er gehört zu den bekanntesten deutschen Marinemalern des 20. Jahrhunderts, er war einer der Überlebenden beim Untergang der "Wilhelm Gustloff".
