The painting delights with a vibrant and summery coloring Bogdanov-Belsky moved from St. Petersburg to Riga in September 1921. Jurmala is a seaside resort on the Baltic Sea, about 20 km away from Riga and also known as the beach of Riga. Condition: The painting is in a very good condition with fresh looking color. The paint surface shows minor craquelé and abrasion. The inspection under UV light reveals a number of small strokes of retouching to the sky and the upper part of the waters. The frame is minimally worn. The painting’s dimensions are 67 x 78 cm, while the frame measures 78 x 87 cm. Nikolaj Petrovich Bogdanov-Belsky (1868-1945) Nikolaj Petrovich Bogdanov-Belsky studied modern painting at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture from 1884 to 1889, and later at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg with Ilja Yefimovich Repin. In the late 1890s, he worked and studied in Paris. From the beginning of the 20th century, the artist participated in various exhibitions in Russia. Later his works were shown in New York, Berlin, Amsterdam, Copenhagen and Paris. Bogdanov-Belsky worked in St. Petersburg for many years before settling in Riga. He became a member of several prominent artists groups, including the ‘Peredvizhniki’ (The Wanderers). Moreover, he was an active member of the Academy of Arts. The painter is known mostly for his genre paintings, especially of peasant children, portraits and impressionist landscape studies. The offered composition depicts a view of a church at the side of a roughly paved village road. Condition: The canvas shows clear pressure marks due to the stretcher. The affected parts are slightly browned and a little rubbed. The canvas is also a bit wavy and the paint surface shows craquelure. The stretcher measures 80 x 77.5 cm, the dimensions of the frame are 88.5 x 86.5 cm.
