DAVID VÁVRA 1957 - PORTRAIT OF REYNEK

          Est: -

The poet, graphic designer, publisher and translator Bohuslav Reynek lived from 1892 to 1971. He belonged to a generation of Czech artists who sought the meaning of art in the harmony of personal conviction and faith with the natural order of the world and its aesthetics. An intellectual with a Christian orientation, he spent almost his entire life in his native Petrkov in the Havlíčkobrod region. Reynek began to draw and paint while studying at the Jihlava secondary school and was self-taught. Through oil paintings, expressionist linocuts, drawings, pastels and etchings, in the 1930s he came to the technique of drypoint. Around this time he also switched from landscape motifs to biblical ones. Reynek's work was not allowed to be published or exhibited from 1948 until the mid-1960s, and he did not receive full recognition until after the fall of communism. David Vávra (*1957) is a Renaissance-type personality - an architect, actor, poet and artist. He studied architecture at the Czech Technical University and the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and is a co-founder of the legendary Sklep Theatre. He is known as an actor of successful films, as well as a guide of the Czech Television's roadmovie: Noisy Cities and Noisy Tracks. Technique: drawing in plaster, Signed: signed verso: David 2021

Bohuslav Reynek was a Czech graphic artist, poet and translator whose graphic letters can be seen as a visual transcription of the poetic language. In the 1930s, he gradually moved away from charcoal and pastel drawing and began to use the technique of drypoint and etching. Just as he left traces on the printing plate, in his poetic work we find a poem about the traces of the unknown with which we walk and search. The graphic sheet is accompanied by a dated and signed New Year's card on special paper from Petrkov, where Bohuslav Reynek stayed. Published: Chalupa, P.: Bohuslav Reynek. 2011. Arbor vitae. p. 365. Framed under anti-reflective glass with UV filter. Technique: drypoint on paper, Signed: sign. lower right: Reynek

Reynek's conception of the New Testament is completely dominated by the story of the betrayal and martyrdom of Christ, on which he created countless variations. Passion of Jesus is his most frequently worked theme. Bohuslav Reynek was a Czech graphic artist, poet and translator, whose graphic sheets can be perceived as a visual transcription of poetic language. In the 1930s, he gradually moved away from charcoal and pastel drawing and began using drypoint and etching techniques. Technique: drypoint, monotype, paper, Signed: sign. lower right: Reynek

The stories about the betrayal, suffering and martyrdom of Christ are the most extensive whole in Reynk's work. Bohuslav Reynek experimented with coloring graphics from the very beginning. He adapted a color press from several plates for his needs so that only one single plate was enough for him. The color is never exactly in the same places - he often experimented with application. He was often very excited about the result and deliberately tried to make each print a little different. Sometimes he even returned to records from earlier years and supplemented them. Passion cycles were printed in Petrkov after 1948 and in modest numbers. Some graphics only in one copy. Technique: drypoint, monotype, paper, Signed: sign. lower right: Reynek

Reynek's graphics with a biblical theme are among the most felt that he has ever created. The work comes from the peak period of Reynek's work. Through his love for animals, he projected emotions into his compositions and made them into symbols, just like in poems. While cats often appear randomly in his works, accompanying people and the plot, randomly appearing in the landscape, playing and taking care of their cat things, the rooster in this case is a unique symbol and may refer to Peter's denial of Christ, which Peter deeply regretted. Technique: Drypoint, monotype, paper, Signed: Lower right "Reynek"

Bohuslav Reynek extensively experimented with the possibilities of dry needling. He often bought old and used plates and used their marks from previous use as focal points when creating graphics. He took them with him to the plain air, where he sketched directly on them with a pencil. He recorded the landscape around Petrkova with the consistency of a documentarian, but he also imprinted his mood and feeling into each graphic. 1940s 17.5 x 15 cm (h x w) Drypoint on Japanese paper. Signed lower right: "Reynek". Bohuslav Reynek was a Czech graphic artist, poet and translator whose prints can be viewed as a visual transcription of the language of poetry. His work was very well received in France, where he exhibited in 1927–1929. In the 1930s he gradually shifted away from charcoal and pastel drawings and started to use the techniques of drypoint and etching. The most important part of Reynek's oevre of prints and poetry was created in the 1950s and 60s, when communist repression affected his family. Reynek's farm was nationalized and he himself could work here only as a worker's hand. He created his Job and Don Quixote series as well as a number of other prints during this period. Petrkov became a "pilgrimage site", where young artists and dissidents found refuge. In 1964 Reynek's wife, the French poet Suzzane Renaud, died, and after a long period Reynek was allowed to exhibit his work. But after 1968 he again became a "banned" artist, and his prints and literary work were not fully appreciated until after 1989. Starting price: 25 000 CZK (980 EUR)
