      Robert Boissard (1570 Valencia - 1601 ): Portrait of Johann Draconites Boissard, Jean Jacques: Editor, Draughtsman; Becker, Matthaeus (the Elder): Printer, c. 1597, Copper engraving Technique: Copper engraving on Paper Date: c. 1597 Description: Monogram in the portrait field on the left: interlaced, majuscule: "BR". The frame inscription (oval and single-line, in Latin) gives the sitter's name, profession, place of birth and death, and the date of death: "IOANNES DRACONITES Theol. Nasc. carolostadij in Franfonia. Obijt. Wittebergae, A°. 1566. 18. Aprilis.". Cartouche inscription (distich, two lines, Latin): "Pauca quidem sed docta leget, quimscripta Draconis Volvit, at hei properam quam gemet isse necem". Portrait bust of Johannes Draconites (1494 in Karlstadt-1566 Wittenberg), he was a German theologian, humanist philosopher and reformer; 1522 pastor in Miltenberg; 1560 president of the bishopric of Pomesania in Marienwerder; from 1564 in Leipzig and Wittenberg. He is depicted with interlaced fingers, holding a shamrock; beautiful floral ornaments. Portrait from the portrait work ICONES QVINQAGINTA VIRORVM from 1597-1599. Radierungen, jeweils monogrammiert. – Nagler, Monogramme, 2022: »…durch mehrere, theils glänzend gestochene Blätter bekannt, welche aber jetzt zu den Seltenheiten gehören.« Nennt namentlich das hier vorlieg. Bildnis des Dichters und Theologen Conrad Lautenbach (1534-1595). Außerdem vorliegend Bildnis des Philologen Johann Hartung (1505-1579). Auch Thieme/B. würdigen die »ziemlich seltenen Blätter«.
