ÉMILE ANDRÉ BOISSEAU (1842-1923). "La defénse du foyer". Patinated bronze. Signed, numbered and with foundry stamp of the Société des Bronzes de Paris. Measurements: 69 x 39 x 21 cm. The sculptural group is conformed by three personages, the father -of Gallic appearance, characterized by his long hair and his toned torso, as well as by the loincloth of skin that he carries-, the mother -that frightened is sheltered, crouched, next to her husband- and a small boy that, crying, appears between the legs of his progenitor. The work becomes an allegory of the family, in which Émile André Boisseau does not represent an aggressive and impulsive man, but the figure of a protective leader, who does not dominate but protects his family, as shown by his right hand on his wife's back. The artist shows us a man who defends his family with the only help of a weapon, already broken, without wearing a helmet or shield, a fact that reveals his bravery and the love he has for both his family and his home. The artist configures a dynamic composition, on the one hand closed as the mother's posture is directed inward, as open, due to the arm of the protagonist and the broken weapon he holds, heading outward, breaking with the pyramidal structure of the rest of the piece. The muscular and strong torso of the Gaul shows us the anatomical study carried out by Boisseau, in which the vein in his neck reflects the state of tension in which he is. Another bronze of the Defense of the foyer is found, life-size, in the Place d'Ajaccio, located in the 7th arrondissement of Paris. A student of the sculptors Auguste Dumont and Jean-Marie Bonnassieux at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Émile André Boisseau is considered a representative artist of the neo-baroque. Participating in the 1876 and 1898 Salons in the French capital, his fame as a bronze sculptor grew, producing a large number of works throughout his artistic career. He is currently represented in the Musée d'Orsay and the Louvre Museum.
