CHRISTIAN LUDWIG BOKELMANN (1844-1894) Casino de Monte-Carlo, 1882 Huile sur panneau signé et daté "Monte-Carlo 1882" en bas à droite. Dimensions : 31 x 39 cm Esquisse du tableau réalisé en 1884. Provenance : Collection privée, Monte-Carlo. Peintre réaliste et naturaliste prussien né à Saint-Jürgen près de Brême, il est associé à l'Ecole de Düsseldorf. Il s'initie à l'Académie des Beaux-Arts de cette ville où il étudie avec Ludwig Knaus et se perfectionne auprès de Wilhelm Sohn. En 1873, il fait sa première grande exposition à l'Exposition mondiale de Vienne et à partir de l'année suivante, il expose régulièrement à l'Académie prussienne des arts. Au cours des années 1880, il entreprend un long voyage d'étude dans les marais du nord de la Frise, inspiré par l'approche "Volkskunde" (ethnographique) de la peinture, développée par Rudolf Jordan et c'est en 1883 qu'il rejoint la colonie d'artistes de Katwijk. Christian Bokelmann meurt après une chute dans un escalier dans son atelier en tentant d'accrocher une couronne de laurier donnée par ses étudiants à l'occasion de son 50ème anniversaire.

After having trained as a business man, Christian Ludwig Bokelmann attended the Düsseldorf Art Academy between 1868 and 1871. In 1892, he became professor of genre and portrait painting at the academy in Karlsruhe and one year later at the academy in Berlin. After the artist's death in the following year his estate was sold over the course of several auctions by J.M. Heberle (H. Lempertz' Söhne), in Cologne and Berlin. His early works were influenced by the largely humourous paintings of Ludwig Knaus and Benjamin Vautier. However, from the mid the 70's onwards, Bockelmann developed an increasingly serious style which was concerned predominantly with socio-critical subjects and attracted international attention and acclaim. Among some of his more famous works is the „Broken Bank", housed in the Milwaukee Art Museum. Our painting depicts the distress and helplessness of the residents of a burning house and the willingness of their neighbours to aid, executed in his short phase as professor at Karlsruhe.
