Agostino Bonalumi Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Plastic Art, Object Artist, b. 1935 - d. 2013

Agostino Bonalumi (July 10, 1935, Vimercate – September 18, 2013, Desio) was an Italian painter, draughtsman and sculptor.

Bonalumi studied technical and mechanical drawing, and exhibited his first works at the “Premio Nazionale Città di Vimercate” (hors concours) in 1948, when he was just thirteen years old.

He held his first solo show at the Galleria Totti, Milan, in 1956. In 1958 he began working with Enrico Castellani and Piero Manzoni, holding a group exhibition at the Galleria Pater, Milan, which was followed by further shows in Rome, Milan and Lausanne, the foundation of Azimuth magazine and his participation in exhibitions at the Azimut gallery.

He started developing the idea of what he would call “pittura – oggetto” (painting-object), following the idea to go beyond the canvas started by their mentor Lucio Fontana. In 1959 he held his first solo show outside Italy in Rotterdam. In 1960 he was one of the founders of the international Nouvelle École Européenne (NEE) movement in Lausanne and his solo exhibition “Agostino Bonalumi. Recent Paintings, Sculptures and Drawings” opened at the New Vision Centre Gallery in London.

I found it of interest for my work because of its elasticity and its brilliant, cold colors. This elasticity led me to explore new plastic solutions in regard of which the construction technique I was using made it both necessary and advisable to review my thinking, apart from the purely technical aspect. Whereas if the nature of a work of art is “given” and “appearance”, what the luminosity and coldness of the industrial coloring accomplished was indeed to displace the appearance, from the pictorial pigmentation to the more rigorous spreading, so as to be now, beyond the “quality” of the materials offered to our sensory perception, a considerably more significant part of the unfolding, of the clarity, of the minimality of the construction. But, as is necessary if art is research, it was an experiment limited in time and in the number of works, among which is worth mentioning, partly because of it’s size, (500 x 1800 cm), the Grande Nero of 1968, in the Museum am Ostwald in Dortmund.. “ (Extract from an interview with Agostino Bonalumi, Milan, 1990)

According to the Archivio Bonalumi, this restoration affects the overall condition of the work Erläuterungen / Comments In der künstlerischen Laufbahn Bonalumis sind die Jahre 1964, 1965 und 1966 bedeutend. The years 1964, 1965 and 1966 are significant in Bonalumi's artistic career. On the one hand, his work was increasingly recognised and appreciated by established galleries. Arturo Schwarz in Milan organised a solo exhibition for him in 1965, the Galleria del Naviglio run by Renato Cardazzo held seven solo shows from 1966 to 1974 and Bonalumi's participation in the 33rd Venice Biennale in 1966 underlined his important position in the Italian art scene. It was also during these years that he found his artistic style: the upholstered "tondo" with the navel-like depression in the middle became an icon par excellence during these years, characterised by precisely crafted seams, protruding even bulges and an accurately applied, uniformly monochrome application of paint. Bonalumi's works transcend the concept of classical painting; they are reliefs with a fascinating effect of light and shadow. Hier: Abstrakte Kompositionen, 2 Farbserigraphien, je 22,5 x 23 cm, signiert, datiert (19)73, nummeriert 33/600 und 449/600, o. Rahmen.

II, Skira, Milan 2015, p.355, no. 138 with ill. The work Bianco by Agostino Bonalumi is an example of his large monochrome canvases. In this case, as the title of the work suggests, the surface is painted with white vinyl tempera. The decision to name the work after colour was a conceptual stance for the artist: colour does not serve to represent form, but is - to use his words - "itself the possibility of form", which is not painted, but instead emerges from colour. Three circles are lined up vertically on Bianco's canvas: the first, in a central position, barely emerges from the surface of the canvas; only the perimeter of the second can be glimpsed, tangentially touching the first and crossing the centre of the third; the latter, which is the lowest, emerges from the canvas like a bulge, a full volume that lends three-dimensionality and balance to the composition. The effect that works like this provoke in the viewer is well described by the artist himself: "Sometimes the circle is placed perpendicular to the surface of the work-object, emerging from within, accentuating the tension that is always perceptible in my works. An effect which, when created by the opposition of the canvas-surface and internal thrusts and pressures, becomes psychological tension through the emergence in the abstraction of a morphism that is the intrusion of a natural element". If the creation of an everted canvas immediately recalls Enrico Castellani - with whom Bonalumi shared a period of mutual exchange as their respective artistic research matured in tandem - the conceptual element that distinguishes the two artists is strong: if for Castellani it was about the surface of the canvas, for Bonalumi it is all a question of content, of attention to what is behind the canvas, to its stuffing. 1964 - the year in which the work presented here was created - is a significant year in his career: on the one hand, public recognition of his artistic production increases; on the other, the poetics of what critics have called his "object-painting" is defined, of which the outline of a circular shape emerging from a monochrome canvas becomes perhaps the most clearly distinctive feature. Bianco is thus exemplary of the artist's work from the early 1960s.
