                Est: £3,000 - £5,000

Henry Bone, RA,  British 1755-1834-  Danaë, after Titian;  enamel on copper, inscribed 'London/ April 1812/ Painted for the Marquis of Lansdown by/ Henry Bone RA. Enamel painter in Ordinary/ to His Majesty and Enamel painter to H.R.H./ the Prince Regent after the Original by Titian/ in the Collection of the Earl of Darnley' to the reverse, 31.7 x 22.6 cm.  Provenance:  The collection of the Earl of Darnley.  The artist's sale, London, Christie's, 30 June 1832, lot 66.  Private Collection, UK.  Exhibited:  London, Royal Academy, 1810, no. 652.  Literature:  R. Walker, 'Henry Bone's Pencil Drawings in the National Gallery', in The Walpole Society, 1999, p. 359, cat. no. 672.  Note:  Bone was known for creating some of the largest enamel paintings of his time, achieving recognition in 1801 when he became an associate of the Royal Academy and was appointed enamel painter to King George III. Bone went on to retain this position through the reigns of George IV and William IV. In 1811 Bone was elected as a Royal Academician, and this same year completed a large enamel painting after Titian’s Bacchus and Ariadne. That picture was sold at Christie's London on the 4th July 2013 (lot 2).  This present work by Bone is also derived from the work of Titian, and depicts the mythological princess Danaë, as narrated by Ovid and Boccaccio. The Venetian painter Titian and his workshop made at least six versions of Danaë (or Danaë and the Shower of Gold), between about 1544 and the 1560s. Ovid recounts how Danaë was confined to a bronze tower following a prophecy that her firstborn would kill her father. Depicted in this work is the moment that Danaë is seduced and becomes pregnant by Zeus, who descended from Mount Olympus to seduce her in the form of a shower of gold. The presence of Cupid on the left-hand side is emblematic of Zeus's desire.

He was a vocal opponent of the slave trade and an advocate for reform in criminal law. In 1806, he was offered the post of Solicitor General although he had never sat in the House of Commons. He accepted and was subsequently knighted and brought into Parliament for Queenborough. In 1810, he successfully introduced a bill that abolished the death penalty for pickpocketing, housebreaking, and other trivial offences. He also helped to establish the principle that criminal defendants were innocent until proven guilty and introduced several bills which abolished cruel and unusual punishments, such as flogging and branding. Romilly's work paved the way for further legal reform in the 19th century. Tragically, in 1818, on hearing the news of the death of his wife, he committed suicide at the age of 61. The original by Sir Thomas Lawrence, dated to 1806-1810, is in the National Portrait Gallery London, inv. no. NPG L268. 12 x 10cm framed

He was appointed to the Privy Council in 1793 and served as the Governor of Madras between 1793-98. He sat in both Irish and English Houses of Commons, but in 1798, he was summoned to the House of Lords in his father's barony of Hobart. From 1801 to 1804, Hobart served as Secretary of State for War and the Colonies. He inherited his father's earldom in 1804, but as he died without issue aged 55 in 1816, he was then succeeded in his earldom by his nephew, George. Australia’s second-oldest city, the present-day capital of Tasmania, was named after him in 1804. Enamelled portraits of Henry VII and Elisabeth of England

                Est: €1,500 - €2,000

Finely rendered pendants in “email en plein” on copper. Depicting the king and queen in facing profiles in church interiors as bride and groom in elegant Renaissance costume holding roses in their hands. With green flecked counter enamel. Henry VII Tudor (Pembrook Castle/Wales 1457 - Richmond Palace 1509) was the founder of the English Tudor dynasty. His marriage to Elisabeth of York (Westminster Palace 1466 - 1503 Tower of London), the daughter of King Edward IV, ended the long War of the Roses, in which the rival families of York (white rose coat of arms) and Lancaster (red rose coat of arms) fought for the right to the English throne. The Tudor roses which the couple hold in their hands symbolise this union. Henry Bone was among the best English miniaturists of his time. He was court painter to George III, George IV, and William IV. He created countless miniatures in enamels after motifs by famous painters, including of portraits of the Elizabethan era. He had several children who also worked as enamelists, the most well-known of which was Henry Pierce, whose style is so close to that of his father that their works are often confused.

She married Augustus Henry East in 1792 aged 20. Henry East became a Rear Admiral.  Bone was appointed Royal Enamelist to King George III, George IV and William IV. He exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy. He produced a number of enamel copies of the work of the great Renaissance and Baroque masters. He was able to sell many of these works, since such subjects were popular in the early nineteenth century. He also continued to receive a steady number of commissions from the Prince of Wales and several other aristocratic patrons for enamel miniatures.  No other enamel artist of the time could produce such large, high quality works. Bone came to be known as the "Prince of Enamelers", as his enamel work has seldom been equaled.

Garlick & A. Macintyre, The Diary of Joseph Farington, Yale, 1978-98 R. Walker, Henry Bone's Pencil Drawings, Walpole Society, LXI, 1999, no.195 The present lot is an interesting example of Bone's work as it is taken from a wax cast of a life-mask by Mountstephen for whom Joseph and Susan Farington sat in 1792. In his diary entry for May 26th, 1796, Farington comments, "I told [Bestland] the model in Wax of me by Mount Stephen is considered a better likeness than Singleton's'.  After his wife's death, aged 50, the process by which the present lot came to be executed, is well documented in Farington's diary. This documentation gives us an interesting insight into Bone's working methods and the relationship with his clients. It would appear that he found working from a wax hard, but one can also imagine that Farington was a demanding client, requiring an exact likeness of his much loved wife who he had lost at such an early age.  This lot is subject to CITES
