Bone Pnxt , also signed on reverse: Robt Trewick Bone Pinx / 15 Berners St. oil on canvas, in its original plaster frame EXHIBITED Royal Academy, 1825, no.196 ('A soldier, his wife and child; portraits') CATALOGUE NOTE This picture, exhibited at the Royal Academy with the above title, is in fact a portrait of Lt. General the Hon. Thomas Fermor-Hesketh, later 4th Earl of Pomfret, with his wife Amabel Elizabeth Borough, whom he married in 1823, and their eldest son (later 5th Earl of Pomfret). For details on the sitter's distinguished military career, see lot 161. The artist was the son of the celebrated miniaturist Henry Bone and younger brother of Henry Pierce Bone. He exhibited at both the Royal Academy and the British Institution between 1813 and 1841.
