Albumen prints (4), forming a four-part panorama, images overall measuring 200 x 1030 mm, flush mounted to modern archival boards. The panorama dates to around 1865-70, still showing the 13th-century Frankish bell tower on the Acropolis which was demolished in 1875, as part of works by the Greek authorities to display the classical monuments in something like their original setting. Although not signed, this photograph is likely to be the work of FÃ©lix Bonfils (1831-1886). For comparison, see the Athens panorama attributed to Bonfils in the collection of the Prentice and Paul Sack Photographic Trust of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, ref. ST1998.0067.C This view was taken from a view point just below the National Observatory. The Athenian Acropolis, one of the most famous landmarks of Ancient Greece, has been an important cultural and religious location since the 3rd millennium BCE. The most prominent building on the Acropolis, the Parthenon, was constructed between 447 and 438 BC as a temple to Athena, although it eventually went on to serve as both a Christian church and a Muslim mosque. All photographs are signed on the plate "Bonfils". Felix Bonfils [1831-1885], greatest photographer of 19th century Eretz Israel. “What sets Bonfils’ work apart is the rare quality of the photographs. Even the most sterile landscape becomes a work of art through the uncompromising angle of the shot” [Early Photographs of Eretz Israel edited by Eli Shiller and Menachem Levine, p. 92]. In the introduction to the album ‘Souvenirs d’Orient’ (published in 1877 and was one of Bonfils’ most famous publications including hundreds of original photographs from Eretz Israel and the East), the president of the French Society of Literature and Science writes: "The photographs of F. Bonfils are among the greatest achievements of our generation... The man who took on a large-scale work did an invaluable service to science while taking countless risks and arduous labor ...". **Originally Listed At $250** Three French albumen prints. (1) Hippolyte Arnoux (French, active 1860-1890). Pyramids of Giza. (2) Felix Bonfils and family (French, 1831-1885) "Deese Isis. Egypte" and (3) "Musee de Gizeh. Sphinx Hycsos." (Two Sculptures of Sphinx in the Museum of Giza) All signed in lower left with title in lower right. A wonderful trio of French photographs of ancient Egyptian monuments as seen in the late 19th century. Felix Bonfils was a French photographer who was captivated by the Middle East. Bonfils took thousands of photographs of the Middle East and in 1872 published "Architecture Antique" by Ducher press. His work was appreciated by tourists of the Romantic Orient. Similarly, Arnoux was one of the first photographers to produce images of Egypt and document the Suez Canal project. Though little is known of Arnoux, he appears to have been in Egypt around the same time of Bonfils and established 2 studios in Port Said. Three 19th C. Photos of Egypt by Arnoux & Bonfils

Three French albumen prints. (1) Hippolyte Arnoux (French, active 1860-1890). Pyramids of Giza. (2) Felix Bonfils and family (French, 1831-1885) "Deese Isis. Egypte" and (3) "Musee de Gizeh. Sphinx Hycsos." (Two Sculptures of Sphinx in the Museum of Giza) All signed in lower left with title in lower right. A wonderful trio of French photographs of ancient Egyptian monuments as seen in the late 19th century. Felix Bonfils was a French photographer who was captivated by the Middle East. Bonfils took thousands of photographs of the Middle East and in 1872 published "Architecture Antique" by Ducher press. His work was appreciated by tourists of the Romantic Orient. Similarly, Arnoux was one of the first photographers to produce images of Egypt and document the Suez Canal project. Though little is known of Arnoux, he appears to have been in Egypt around the same time of Bonfils and established 2 studios in Port Said. Holy Land.- Palestine.- Bonfils (Felix & Adrien) Palestine - Greece 1897, 62 mounted photographs, most c.215 x 281 mm (8 1/2 x 11 1/4 in.), 24 signed Bonfils in negative, 2 signed Adrien Bonfils in negative, one with notes in manuscript to verso, scattered faint spotting to mounts, including views of Egypt, Greece, Pompeii, Amalfi, Naples, Jaffa, Ramleh, Jerusalem, Bethlehem, the Dead Sea and the Church of Nativity, original half-morocco album, gilt, g.e., a little rubbed, oblong folio, c.1897. ⁂ Félix Bonfils, his wife Lydie, and son Adrien were famous French photographers in Beirut during the second half of the nineteenth century. The family moved to Beirut in 1867 where they opened a photographic studio called Maison Bonfils.
