[WORLD WAR I]. BONFILS, Robert (French, 1886-1972). La Manière Française [The French Way]. Paris: Libraire ‘Lutetia’, 1917. French folio of pochoir-colored lithograph prints on Arches laid paper celebrating the French war effort during the First World War, many signed in the plate. First and only edition, number 215/320, preface by Lucien Descaves. Containing 20 loose sheets, with 16 plates pochoir-colored by E. Charpentier under the direction of Bonfils. In the original portfolio with paper-covered boards, pastedowns and flaps, and tricolor ribbons. Uncommon. Sheets 12 ½ x 9”; cover 13 ? x 10”. Light dust-soiling, else very crisp and vibrant. Very good.

From the estate of Maurice Binder. Born in 1918, Maurice Binder was an American film title designer, best known for his work on 14 James Bond films, including Dr. No. He died in 1991 at the age of 72.

The original illustration for the paperback cover of The Gay Dogs (Man from C.A.M.P. #7), by Don Holliday (a pseudonym used by Victor J. Banis, Lawrence Block, Hal Dresner, and others), published by Ember Library Books, San Diego, with a copy of the first edition. Banis is considered the "godfather of modern popular gay fiction." The Man from C.A.M.P. was a series of 9 gay, pulp, parody novels written by Banis between 1966 and 1968. Based on The Man from U.N.C.L.E. series which was broadcast from 1964 until 1968.

ROBERT BONFILS (1886-1972) PARIS / EXPOSITION INTERNATIONALE DES ARTS DÉCORATIFS ET INDUSTRIELS MODERNES. 1925. 23 1/2x15 3/4 inches, 59 3/4x40 cm. Vaugirard, Paris. Condition A-: slight darkening in margins; minor creases and abrasions at edges. Paper. Robert Bonfils worked as an illustrator, bookbinder, painter and decorator and was one of the most active French artists during the Art Deco period. As such, he received the commission to design one of four official posters to advertise the 1925 Parisian exhibition, from which the term Art Deco was derived. His image, in the style of a woodcut, is a classical allegory of a young girl frolicking in the woods with a gazelle. Above them is a stylized rose that was one of the symbols of the exhibition. Marcel Picard, Paris Created in 1903 as a reaction against the more conservative Paris Salon, the Salon d'Automne focused on displaying more revolutionary and cutting-edge paintings and sculptures in its annual show. Featured artists over the years included the likes of Villon, Renoir, Rodin, Cézanne, Matisse, Gauguin, Picasso, Braque, Chagall, Brancusi, Modigliani, and, Robert Bonfils, the designer of this poster. As an artist, Bonfils always attempted to balance the romance of the 19th century with the geometry of the 20th century, both of which are brought together in this design.
