      The print is basen on Canova's tempera painting from 1798/99 (now in the Gipsoteca e Museo Antonio Canova in Possagno, Veneto). The figures of the dancers are inspired by the style of Herculaneum fresco paintings, which Canova saw in 1779. Good conditions: light foxing, some small spots and light peeling. With frame and glass (77 x 107 x 10 cm).

      Acquaforte e bulino. mm 558x630. Bernini Pezzini/Fiorani, S2. Dal bassorilievo in gesso che in pendant con Insegnare agli ignoranti Canova eseguì nel 1795 per Le opere di misericordia; con i due episodi che hanno Socrate come protagonista, erano destinati, assieme alla Nascita di Bacco e alla Morte di Adone, ad Alessandro Lante (1760-1818). L'esemplare conservato a Possagno nella casa natale (CNC, n. 5) non reca alcuna firma, mentre il nome di Martino de' Boni compare in uno conservato all'Ashmolean Museum di Oxford. Poiché la matrice non fa parte del fondo Canova acquisito dalla Calcografia camerale, è stato ipotizzato che il foglio sia stato eseguito su iniziativa del committente del rilievo (Pavanello, 1976, n. 92). La matrice non è stata rintracciata. Ottima prova su carta calcografica pesante priva di filigrana.
