      • Italian Paolo Boni Original Collage Art
        Nov. 16, 2024

Italian Paolo Boni Original Collage Art

        Est: $400 - $700

Signed collage art for Art Expo, New York, March 1979 by listed Italian artist Paolo Boni (1926-2017). Pencil signed. Size: 29 7/8" x 23 1/2" framed, 26" x 19 1/2" unframed. Painter, printmaker, and sculptor Paolo Boni was born in Vicchio di Mugello, Tuscany, Italy, on April 12, 1926. His formal art training began early, enrolling at the Liceo Artistico di Porta Romana (State Artistic High School, Porta Romana) as a teen, studying under sculptor Corrado Vigni. By 1946 he was regularly exhibiting throughout the major cities of Italy. He and his wife, American photographer Katherine White, moved to Paris, France, in 1954, where Boni established a studio in the city as well as in rural Alésia, and became known as the "Italian artist from Paris". He exhibited in France, Italy, and the United States, and began investing time learning intaglio printmaking techniques that allowed him to employ his knowledge of sculpting. He developed a style in which he would use relief and integlio processes, affixing pieces of carefully shaped metal to the plate, often individually inking the pieces or occasionally leaving the entire composition uninked, to form a collage of shapes. In the 1970s he named this technique "grafisculpture". Boni's work is held in the Pushkin Museum (Moscow); Picasso Museum in Antibes; the Contemporary Art Museums of Chicago; the Museum of Modern Art (NY); the Museum of Modern Art (Paris); the New York Public Library; the National Museum of Fine Arts, Quebec (Canada); the National Gallery (Washington, D.C.), among others. Paolo Boni died in Paris, France, on March 29, 2017. Detailed condition reports are not included in this catalog. Lemann, New Orleans, Louisiana. Notes: "In the Grimaldi Museum at Antibes, which is undoubtedly one of the finest small museums you could find anywhere, there is an exhibit of Boni, an Italian sculptor who, like everybody else spends six months in Paris and lives in Vallauris during the summer. We got one of his works in travertine and had a chance to meet him and his family - his wife turns out to be from Cleveland, Ohio. Boni has exhibited in America and his works have been purchased by the Museum of Modern Art in New York and Boston Fine Arts Museum. Monsieur le Conservateur, curator of the Grimaldi Museum, age 76, is quite a powerful figure and personally arranges all the exhibitions. I attempted to take a picture of him but have not been successful so far." - Thomas B. Lemann Travel Journals, Antibes, 1965
