      Est: €12,000 - €15,000

EVA BONNIER (Stockholm, 1857- Copenhagen, 1909). "Interior of orientalist cafe with men smoking hookah". Oil on canvas. Size: 107 x 132 cm (126 x 151 cm). A group of men are gathered in an interior, bathed by the gloom, with a single point of light, which enters weakly by the upper left area of the composition. This ray of light comes into contact with the smoke of the hookah, also known as hookah, thus creating a dense atmosphere which in turn is reinforced by the way in which the author applies the brushstrokes. Eva Bonnier began her art studies in the workshop of the master Arvid Gottfrid Virgin, and later in 1875 she began studying at August Malmström's school of painting. Three years later in 1878, she was admitted to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm, and later moved to Paris in the company of her friend Hanna Hirsch. In Paris, Bonnier studied at the Académie Colarossi for Gustave Courtois, among others. The Paris years were among her most productive, with several works of coloristic importance. Also during this period she was admitted to the Paris Salon of 1887 and to the Universal Exposition of 1889 where she received the Honorable Mention for Music. Eva Bonnier was also a member of the Artists' Union and for a time a member of its board, becoming involved in the Opponent Movement, Bonnier returned to Sweden in 1889 and devoted herself to portrait painting until about 1906. including portraits of Lisen Bonnier, Hjalmar Lundbohm, Moritz Rubenson, Carl Jonas Meijerberg and Oscar Levertin. Bonnier. The exotic and 'orientalism' were in fashion in the nineteenth century and Eva Bonnier came into contact with this artistic current as can be seen in this particular work, but did not make many works inspired by orientalism, but based his pictorial production on other themes already mentioned. This painting was probably made in the last years of her stay in Paris, which lasted 1883-1889.
