Harry Martin Jones (1890-1973) was an early aviation pioneer and a member of the "Early Bird" organization. The organization was started in 1928 and accepted a membership of 598 pioneering aviators. Membership was limited to those who piloted a glider, gas balloon, or airplane, prior to December 17, 1916, covering the entirety of the pioneer era of aviation, and just over two years into WWI. Jones made his first flight in 1911 and was the first licensed pilot of the state of Rhode Island. He managed and promoted the first air show ever held in the state in 1912. One of his most famous flights was in January of 1913 when he became the first pilot to fly a mail/parcel flight from Boston to Providence to New York. This flight took him 52 DAYS, due to bad weather & mechanical breakdowns! Jones then began a career as a barnstormer and exhibition pilot and during WWI he earned a commission in the United States Army as a lieutenant. During WWI he served as a test pilot and trained Army pilots. In 1919 he moved to Maine and became the most famous New England aviator and served as the Aviation commissioner of the state and also served in the Civil Aeronautics Administration." Marked upon the stretcher "May 1964 Sickmans Mill Between Conestoga and Marticville Lanc. County, PA.". Book is a Pennsylvania Dutch landscape painter born in Lancaster County. He is a 1924 graduate of Millersville Normal School and earned a BA in Education degree from Pennsylvania State College in 1929. Book also earned a Master's Degree of art from Columbia University. MEASUREMENTS: 33-1/2" x 27-3/7". Overall with frame 39-3/4" x 34". CONDITION: Light undulation to top left of canvas.

He resided in nearby Lancaster Township. He painted landscape scenes from the Lancaster area, the Chesapeake Bay area, New England and Florida.
