Landscape with Waterfall, Attributed to Orazio Borgianni (Roma, h. 1575-1616)

        Est: €10,000 - €12,000

Oil on canvas. (Rome, ca. 1575-1616). Italian painter and engraver. His training takes place fundamentally in Rome, where he is interested both in the examples of classical antiquity and in the naturalism of Caravaggio. In 1598 he is already in Spain, and in 1601 he is in Pamplona. In June 1603 he appears as one of the signatories of the petition for the establishment of an artistic academy in Madrid. Probably three of the works in the Prado correspond to this first Spanish stage: Christ crucified, Saint Francis receiving the stigmata and Saint Christopher. Between 1603 and 1604 he is again in Italy, but in 1605 he returns to Spain, where he remains until 1607, the year of his definitive return to Rome, where he will remain until his death. His stays in Spain provided him with a clientele that continues to demand commissions from him even after his return to Italy; this is how the works for the Valladolid monastery of Porta Coeli are understood. In them, Borgianni carried out some canvases of clear Caravaggio ancestry, an influence that was felt in the Roman painter especially from 1604, and despite the personal differences between the two artists. In 1610 he is appointed a member of the Academy of Virtuosi of the Pantheon. There are four canvases by Borgianni in the inventories of the Museo del Prado. Christ crucified comes from the Museum of the Trinity, while Saint Francis receiving the stigmata and Saint Christopher are modern acquisitions, from 1984 and 1988, respectively. Orazio Borgianni (1578 Rome – 1616), Saint Christopher

        Est: €10,000 - €20,000

A rocky landscape with a river lying behind the boulder that Christopher is about to climb. Christopher carries a small baby Jesus on his bent neck with a large visible cosmic sphere behind him. In contemporary expertise, Delpriori describes plausible comparisons, for example with a Saint Christopher by the same painter in the Prado in Madrid and a similar depiction in the Scottish National Gallery in Edinburgh and a copper engraving depicting Saint Christopher. While the landscape is largely monochrome, the clothes of Christopher and the Infant Jesus stand out in color, glowing crimson and blue towards the viewer. Delpriori lists five known (?) versions of the same subject, namely the version shown in the expert at the National Gallery of Scotland in Edinburgh, another was offered at Christie's in June 2020 under number 34, another version is in the Berlin Picture Gallery, another in an English private collection, and altarpiece near Seville, Spain. All these variants are slightly different and are dated around 1606-1610.

(Rome 1574–1616) Saint Francis at prayer, oil on panel, 60 x 45.4 cm, framed We are grateful to Gianni Papi for confirming the attribution of the present painting and for his help in cataloguing this lot. This impressive painting representing Saint Francis at prayer, in a state of heightened emotion, with tears running visibly down his cheeks, is a characteristic work of Oriazio Borgianni’s Spanish period. The saint is shown in half-length and the brushwork together with the style of depicting the saint’s features and hands is very close to those in the Saint Francis receiving the stigmata conserved in the Prado, Madrid (inv. no. P006997) and to those in the Crucifixion in the Bishop’s Palace in Toledo (see G. Papi, Orazio Borgianni, Soncino 1993, p. 154, fig. 3). The artistic, figurative culture prevalent in Emilia in Borgianni’s formative years is evident in the present work, in particular the work of Lelio Orsi and of the young Ludovico Carracci. Elements from Correggio and the influence of Parmigianino are derived from the paintings of Ludovico Carracci, and were sufficiently apparent to lead the scholar, Cesare Brandi, to suggest that Borgianni may have stayed in Parma (see C. Brandi, Disegno della pittura in Italia, Torino 1980, pp. 466–468). These influences intensified as soon as the painter reached Spain due to the influence of the paintings of El Greco and his circle. The exact date of the artist’s Spanish sojourn cannot yet be defined with certainty, but it can be presumed that he arrived between 1597 and 1598. However, he was in Spain on 9 January 1605 according to his signature in the inventories of the Marquis Poza, and he was back in Rome by 27 June 1606 (for these biographic details, see G. Papi, Orazio Borgianni. Un genio inquieto nella Roma di Caravaggio, exhibition catalogue, Milan 2020, pp. 165–67). In Spain, Borgianni worked for the nobility and court officials in various important localities including Pamplona, Toledo, Madrid and Saragozza (see H. E. Wethey, Orazio Borgianni in Italy and in Spain, in: The Burlington Magazine, vol. 106, no. 733, April 1964, p. 149). On his return to Italy he was able to create an entirely personal synthesis of the diverse figurative cultures to which he had been exposed, combining the pictorial space of Correggio with Venetian colour filtered through his experience of El Greco and the Spanish tenebrists. It is not incidental that Bellori was to compare him to one of the great masters of Italian painting, Giulio Romano.

Est: €9,000 - €12,000

DER HEILIGE CHRISTOPHORUS Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 116 x 83 cm. Literatur: Vgl. Old Masters, Orazio Borgianni, 1574–1616 St. Christopher with the Baby Jesus

        Est: €150,000 - €200,000

Orazio Borgianni, born in Rome, was trained by his brother Giulio Borgianni. He grew up painting under the pontificate of Pope Sixtus V (1585–1590). In 1593 he went to Sicily and then spent several years in Spain until he returned to Rome in 1606 and met the Caravaggism that shaped him. Its most productive phase was between 1605 and 1616. Under a dramatic cloudy sky, the giant Christophorus crosses the course of the river in a wild mountain landscape, the little Jesus child on his shoulders, who is getting heavier and heavier than the world, as Christophorus says to the child. This replied to him that he had borne not only the world, but also the creator of the world (Legenda aurea). The dialogue between the two is expressed in the turns of the head and the touching gesture of the baby Jesus, who puts his hand on the giant's head. Orazio Borgiannis has painted the figures in bright colors and gives Christophorus a dynamic physical expressiveness that reveals determination and willpower to the viewer and reminds one of the examples of Titian's fresco from 1524 in the Doge's Palace in Venice. Borgianni's creative and expressive way of painting with his mystical color tone and the speaking emotional world rightly show that Oriazio Borgianni is one of the best Roman painters of his time. Orazio Borgianni composed the composition of St. Christophorus repeated several times (see report by A. Delpriori). According to A. Delpriori, several versions are considered to be autographs: The painting in the National Gallery Edinburgh, from a private collection auctioned at Christie's (paintings and sculptures by old masters, online, 2-19 June 2020, lot no. 34), an in an English private collection and above all a large altarpiece in Spain, in Gelves near Seville. There is also an etching after the composition, made by Giovanni Giacomo de Rubeo (copy among others in the British Museum), after which copies were made. While the previously known authentic versions are night scenes, the version presented here plays during the day under a dramatic sky, where the sun breaks through the clouds. It shows a background similar to that in the etching. Another difference to the nightly versions is the expansion of the image field upwards. The tree trunk that Christophorus uses ends in a palm crown. The newly emerged version is closer to Roman art in the late 16th century than to Caravaggism in the early 17th century. Another interpretation of the subject by Borgianni is in the Prado in Madrid. Here the scene also takes place during the day and the palm crown of the tree trunk is just hinted at at the top of the picture.

Oil on canvas. 76 x 140 cm. Orazio Borgianni was a prominent Italian painter, but he is also known for his etchings. He was born in Rome but spent a large part of his life in Spain. His painting style is a synthesis of the Carracci family and the tenebrism of Caravaggio, which is most evident in the paintings of San Carlo Borromeo in the Church of San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane (1612) and then in the painting of the same saint from 1616, which is now in the Hermitage in St. Petersburg.

17th century Italian School, attributable to Orazio Borgianni (1575 - 1616) "Saint Gregory the Great as Pontiff and Doctor of the Church"

        Est: €12,000 - €18,000

17th century Italian School, attributable to Orazio Borgianni (1575 - 1616) "Saint Gregory the Great as Pontiff and Doctor of the Church" Oil on canvas. Circa 1610 - 1616. Painting of great quality and accomplished Baroque naturalism. The light at the left side of the picture shines on the saint´s face and the magnificent cape which forms deep folds and falls to the bottom of the canvas. The mastery of the artist can best be appreciated in this treatment of the materials and brocades, which faithfully reproduces the textures, giving a great feeling of volume to the figure. The formal scene and composition have great similarities to the Saint Gregory which is kept at the chapterhouse in Huesca. The painter of this Saint Gregory is unknown. However, there are other paintings with the same name and of the same period which can throw some light on some aspects of the painter. In Spain there are at least three paintings in the same series, identical to this one, of the Fathers of the Church. There is the one kept at the Prado Museum, which was previously attributed by A. L. Mayer to Herrera el Viejo, but is now catalogued as anonymous, 17th century Italian. There is also one at the Episcopal Museum and chapterhouse in Huesca, which Ms. M. C. Lacarra Ducay y C. García listed in the museum catalogue in 1984 as being from the Caravaggio circle, and there is one at Santa María de Palacio, in Logroño. This concentration of three of the best of the series in Spain suggests, according to Ismael Gutiérrez Pastor "that the possibility could be considered that the artist is an Italian painter working in the Spanish sphere. In this case, the figure of Orazio Borgianni fits perfectly with the stylistic and historical circumstances which appear in these paintings. Borgianni spent time in Spain at least twice: from 1595 - 1603 and from 1604 - 1605, with a short stay in Rome in between, and a return to the papal city after 1605, after which his originally mannerist style transforms, under the influence of Caravaggio. In the case that this series of paintings can be attributed to Borgianni, they will be paintings from after his definitive return to Italy, however, the painter never lost contact with his Spanish clientele, and that is why he became one of the first propagators of Caravaggio´s style in Spain." 182 x 100 cm.
