EMMA BORMANN* (Vienna 1887 - 1974 Riverside, California) At the port of Messina lithography/paper, 18 x 22,8 cm signed E. Bormann, dated 1913 entitled Im Hafen von Messina (at the port of Messina) ESTIMATE °€ 60 - 100 STARTING PRICE °€ 60 Emma Bormann was a 20th-century Austrian painter and graphic artist who lived in East Asia and the United States for almost 30 years. The daughter of the ancient historian Eugen Bormann studied at the University of Vienna from 1912 to 1917 and took part in the fourth Vienna university trip to Sicily and Tunisia in 1913, where she also met Oskar Laske. Bormann received her doctorate in German studies and archeology in 1917. At the same time, she attended Ludwig Michalek's graphic arts training and research institute and took courses in graphic techniques at the arts and crafts school in Munich. She then worked as a teacher at the private training workshops for graphic techniques in Munich. Her first woodcut was created in 1918 and woodcuts subsequently became her preferred artistic technique. In 1920 she exhibited for the first time at the Künstlerhaus in Vienna. From 1920 to 1923 she attended courses with Alfred Cossmann at the Graphic Teaching and Research Institute in Vienna, and from 1926 to 1939 she was a drawing lecturer at the University of Vienna. From 1920 onwards she made numerous trips to Europe and in 1936 to the USA. After her forced leave of absence in 1939, she went to China, where she lived in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beihai and Beijing until 1950. Then she returned to Europe via Japan, Hawaii and the USA. From 1953 Bormann lived in Tokyo, from where she traveled within Japan and to Asia. From 1957 she lived with her daughters in Tokyo and Riverside. The impressions of her travels and her cosmopolitan life were also reflected in her works. Bormann primarily created woodcuts and linocuts, but also etchings and oil paintings. Her favorite motifs were cityscapes and busy theaters, concerts and opera halls. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights. In the case of normal taxation (marked °), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax of 13%, for photographs 20%, is added to the sum of the highest bid and the buyer's premium. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
